Chapter 1 - The Shattered Brace and the Ballroom Silence**

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom hummed softly, casting a brilliant, dazzling light over hundreds of elite socialites, politicians, and business tycoons who had gathered to celebrate Salvatore’s birthday. But in a quiet corner near the arched French doors, the glittering atmosphere froze into absolute, bone-chilling silence. Lucinda, resplendent in a custom-tailored emerald gown that cost more than a small car, stood over six-year-old Ruby with a cold, mocking smile. With a sudden, vicious jerk, Lucinda tore the medical support brace straight off Ruby’s fractured leg—and watched the terrified little girl collapse onto the marble floor.

“Pain will make you stronger, you little brat,” Lucinda hissed under her breath, loud enough only for the child to hear.

Ruby crumpled against the cold stone, gasping for air as fresh, hot tears streamed down her cheeks, clutching her injured leg.

Salvatore crossed the ballroom floor like a predatory cat, dropping his champagne flute as the glass shattered against the floorboards. He rushed to his daughter, dropping to his knees and gathering her trembling, fragile body into his arms.

“Ruby… baby, look at me,” Salvatore pleaded, his voice cracking with a fierce, protective terror. “What did she do?”

Ruby buried her small, damp face against her father’s expensive suit jacket, her tiny hands fisted in his lapels as she sobbed. “Daddy… she takes it off whenever you leave the room,” the little girl wept, her voice trembling uncontrollably. “She says I’m just pretending to be broken for your attention.”

The ballroom went completely, terrifyingly silent. The two hundred guests held their breath, terrified to even blink.

Salvatore slowly lifted his head, turning his gaze from his daughter up toward Lucinda. His eyes were no longer human; they were pools of black ice, radiating a lethal fury that made the nearest guests instinctively step back.

“Whenever I leave?” Salvatore’s voice was a low, terrifying rasp that cut through the silence like a razor blade.

Lucinda opened her mouth, her face draining of all color as she realized she had miscalculated entirely. She said nothing.

Before she could invent a lie, one of Salvatore’s elite bodyguards stepped forward from the shadows of the doorway.

“Boss…” the guard murmured, his face tight with controlled rage.

He reached into his jacket pocket and handed Salvatore a small, black micro-SD memory card.

“The ballroom security system has been running continuous background loops during the birthday preparations this week,” the bodyguard stated clearly. “It recorded everything.”
