Chapter 3 - The Midnight Deadline**

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed 11:45 PM. Only fifteen minutes until Emily’s nineteenth birthday officially began.
Inside the study, the atmosphere was thick with impending doom. Vanessa had called in her own private legal counsel—a high-priced corporate shark named Marcus Vance, no relation, who specialized in hostile takeovers and asset stripping. Marcus sat across the desk, looking smugly through a stack of falsified guardianship papers.
“Mr. Vance,” Marcus said with a condescending smirk, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. “Let’s not drag this out into an ugly family feud. My client holds the power of attorney over Miss Emily Vance. Under New York probate law, any medical conditions, personal styling choices, or domestic disputes are entirely at the guardian's discretion. Hand over the trust keys, and we can all walk away quietly.”
I didn't blink. I slowly turned my gaze from Marcus to Vanessa, who stood behind him with a triumphant, venomous grin, wearing a diamond necklace she had purchased using embezzled foundation funds.
“You’re forgetting one critical detail, counselor,” I said calmly.
“And what’s that?” Marcus scoffed.
“The document in my hand isn't a probate guardianship form,” I replied, un-creasing the folded paper on the desk. “It’s the original, unamended 2008 bloodline trust indenture, signed by the late patriarch and witnessed by three federal judges. It explicitly states that upon her nineteenth birthday, the primary beneficiary—Emily Vance—gains absolute, unconditional operational control of Vance Holdings, provided she passes a biological and genetic verification test administered by the corporate trustee.”
Vanessa’s triumphant smile instantly vanished. “That clause was invalidated by the probate court two years ago!”
“Was it?” I raised an eyebrow, sliding a certified court stamp across the mahogany wood. “Or did you bribe a corrupt probate clerk to lose the appellate filing? Fortunately, I keep certified copies in a federal safety deposit box that your little forged signatures couldn't touch.”
Marcus grabbed the paper, his eyes scanning the legal jargon rapidly. As his gaze hit the bottom clause regarding genetic verification, his face turned the color of curdled milk. He looked up at Vanessa in sheer horror. “You... you didn't tell me about the genetic clause. If she takes the verification test tonight, the entire holding company transfers automatically to her name. You’ll be left with nothing.”
“She won't take any test!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging across the desk toward the paper.
Before her fingernails could scratch the parchment, the study doors flew open wide.
Emily walked in.
She wasn't wearing the scorched blonde wig. Her head was held high, revealing her natural, beautiful form without a shred of shame or fear. Standing beside her was Maria, holding a secure medical verification scanner, accompanied by two armed federal marshals and three senior members of the Vance Holdings board of directors who had been briefed on the emergency protocol.
The room went dead silent.

Vanessa froze halfway across the desk, looking at Emily as if she were staring at a ghost.
