Chapter 2 - The Secret Beneath the Scalp**

An hour later, the penthouse was quiet. Emily was resting safely in the guest wing under Maria’s watchful, loving care, while Vanessa paced furiously across the Persian rug in the formal study, her high heels clicking like a countdown clock.
“You’re blowing this completely out of proportion, Arthur!” Vanessa snapped, swirling a glass of expensive white wine as she tried to regain control of the narrative. “Emily has mental health issues! She pulls her own hair out—she suffers from trichotillomania! That’s why she wears the wig! She set herself on fire for attention, and that maid encouraged her!”
I sat behind the massive mahogany desk, my fingers steepled as I stared coldly at the woman standing before me. For over a year, Vanessa had forced Emily to wear that specific blonde wig every single day, public and private alike, claiming it was for her self-esteem. But as I looked at the scorched synthetic fibers resting in an evidence bag on my desk, I knew the real, terrifying truth.
The wig wasn't about fashion. It wasn't about alopecia, either—though Emily’s condition was real. The wig was a biological disguise.
Sixteen years ago, Emily’s biological mother—a brilliant genetic researcher and my closest confidante—had vanished under mysterious circumstances after discovering that Vanessa’s family was orchestrating a massive corporate embezzlement scheme against Vance Holdings. Before disappearing, she left behind a confidential medical and legal dossier proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that Emily carried a rare, distinctive genetic marker—a unique pigmentation pattern on the crown of her scalp that genetically linked her directly to the founding bloodline of the multi-billion-dollar Vance empire.
As long as Emily wore the blonde synthetic wig that completely covered her head, people only saw a frail, insecure teenager struggling with hair loss. But beneath that wig lay the undeniable physical proof of her true identity—and her absolute, unalienable right to control ninety percent of the family fortune upon her nineteenth birthday, which was happening precisely at midnight tonight.
Vanessa knew about that genetic marker. She had discovered the old medical files in her husband’s private vault months ago. That was why she had systematically isolated Emily, forced her to wear the suffocating wig day and night, and psychologically tortured her into believing she was hideous, weak, and dependent. If Emily’s true identity and genetic verification were publicly revealed, Vanessa’s fraudulent marriage certificates, forged wills, and illegal asset transfers would instantly crumble into dust.
By setting the wig on fire, Vanessa hadn't just tried to humiliate Emily—she had desperately attempted to destroy the very symbol of her stepdaughter's identity, hoping to burn away the physical evidence before midnight struck.
“You’re sweating, Vanessa,” I said quietly, breaking the heavy silence.
“Don’t play games with me, Arthur,” she hissed, slamming her wine glass down on the table so hard the crystal cracked. “Emily signs the corporate trust transfer documents tomorrow morning at nine o’clock. As her legal guardian, I control her assets until she turns twenty-one. That’s what the court order says.”
I leaned forward, unlocking the top drawer of my desk with a small brass key. I pulled out a crisp, folded piece of legal parchment—yellowed slightly by time, but pristine in its legal perfection.
Vanessa’s breath hitched. Her eyes dilated in absolute terror.
“You’re looking for this, aren't you?” I asked softly, holding up the folded paper.
“That... that was destroyed in the fire at the country house three years ago,” Vanessa whispered, her voice trembling for the first time.

“Fires destroy a lot of things, Vanessa,” I replied, standing up slowly. “But truth has a stubborn habit of surviving.”
