Chapter 3 - The Family Meeting and the Corporate Coup**

I returned to our family estate on the outskirts of Cedar Rapids that evening like a storm about to break. The sprawling neo-classical mansion, usually a beacon of corporate success and familial warmth, now felt like a mausoleum. I walked through the grand mahogany double doors to find my mother Florence, my brother Mason, my sister Paige, and my sister-in-law Brenda seated in the formal drawing room. They looked like defendants awaiting a harsh judge’s verdict. Brenda was holding a glass of scotch with a hand that shook so badly the amber liquid sloshed over the rim. I didn't bother taking off my overcoat. I stood at the threshold, my shadow stretching across the Persian rug. "Vivienne is awake," I announced, my voice dangerously quiet. "She remembers waking up in the dark, smelling pine and damp earth. And the Cedar Rapids police are currently dusting her coffin for fingerprints and DNA."
Florence dropped her teacup; fine bone china shattered against the marble floor, spraying porcelain shards everywhere. "Conrad! How dare you speak to your family like this! We are mourning a tragedy, and you are treating us like common criminals because of some hysterical medical fluke!" she screeched, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and absolute arrogance. Mason stood up, trying to project a false air of authority. "Look, bro, we're all stressed out. Brenda made a mistake organizing things too quickly, sure, but accusing us of... of murder? That's insane!" I walked forward slowly, my boots clicking rhythmically against the floor, and slammed a heavy leather-bound corporate portfolio onto the glass coffee table right in front of them. "Let’s talk about mistakes, Mason. Or better yet, let’s talk about corporate embezzlement."
Brenda gasped, her face instantly draining of all color. "What... what are you talking about?" she whispered hoarsely. I leaned down, resting my knuckles on the table, staring straight into her terrified eyes. "Over the last six months, someone inside Pendelton Enterprises' purchasing department systematically siphoned four point two million dollars into offshore shell accounts in the Cayman Islands. And the final authorization signature on every single fraudulent wire transfer wasn't Mason's, and it wasn't mine. It was yours, Brenda." Paige buried her face in her hands and began to sob hysterically. "I told you we shouldn't have done it! I told you Conrad would find out!" Brenda hissed viciously at Paige, snapping her head around. "Shut your stupid mouth, Paige, or I swear to God I'll drag you down with me!"
The mask was completely off. The family I had loved, supported, and funded for decades was nothing more than a syndicate of parasites and murderers. I straightened up, pulling my phone from my pocket and tapping the screen to display an active recording waveform. "Everything you've just said is being streamed directly to Captain Miller of the Cedar Rapids Police Department," I said calmly. "And that's not all. Two hours ago, my corporate legal team executed an emergency audit of Vivienne’s personal trust assets. Three days before her supposed 'death,' someone forged her signature on a legal deed transferring her thirty percent voting shares in Pendelton Enterprises directly to Florence and Mason."

Florence’s posture collapsed. The grand matriarch of the family suddenly looked ancient, frail, and utterly defeated. "She was going to give everything to that bastard daughter of her secret past—that girl Maeve's granddaughter, or whatever bloodline she discovered," Florence spat out with venomous hatred. "Vivienne threatened to rewrite her will and cut us all off from the family fortune to give it to strangers! She was destroying everything we built!" I felt my chest tighten into a knot of agonizing betrayal. They hadn't just tried to murder my wife for corporate greed; they had murdered her out of pure, petty malice and fear of losing their unearned wealth. Before my mother could finish her confession, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion were violently kicked off their hinges.
