Chapter 2 - The Hospital Isolation and the Hidden Medical Files**

The sirens wailing through the ambulance doors were deafening, but they were nothing compared to the roaring in my ears as Dr. Lucas Albright rushed Vivienne into the emergency trauma bay of Cedar Rapids General Hospital. I tried to follow them past the swinging double doors, but a burly hospital security guard blocked my path. "Family must wait in the lobby, Mr. Pendelton. The medical team is stabilizing her core temperature and reversing severe oxygen deprivation." I paced the sterile linoleum floor of the waiting room like a caged animal. My mind raced through the impossible physics of what had just occurred. Vivienne had been pronounced dead twenty-four hours earlier by Dr. Albright himself, following a sudden collapse at our estate. She had been embalming-ready, placed in a sealed casket, and lowered into the ground. How could someone survive inside a sealed wooden box for an entire day unless... unless she hadn't been dead when they closed the lid?
Ten minutes later, my brother Mason and my sister Paige rushed into the waiting room, their faces pale and slick with nervous sweat. Mason practically threw himself into a chair, wringing his hands. "Conrad, oh God, is it true? Is Vivienne... is she alive?" I stopped pacing and stared directly at my younger brother, narrowing my eyes. "She’s alive, Mason. Thanks to a snapped rope, we discovered she was breathing. But what I want to know is why your wife Brenda was sprinting out of the cemetery before the ambulance even hit its sirens." Paige flinched violently at the mention of Brenda’s name, gripping her handbag like a lifeline. "Brenda... Brenda gets panic attacks around medical emergencies, you know that, Conrad! Don't look for conspiracies where there's just panic!" she stammered, her voice pitching an octave too high. Before I could interrogate them further, the heavy doors opened and Dr. Albright walked out, looking profoundly shaken, wiping his brow with a paper towel. He motioned me into his private consultation office, closing the blinds firmly behind us.
"Mr. Pendelton, your wife’s survival is nothing short of a biological miracle," Dr. Albright said, though his eyes wouldn't meet mine. "She was suffering from an extremely rare, induced state of profound metabolic stasis—a pharmacological coma that mimics clinical death down to a zero-detectable pulse on standard household monitors. But here is the disturbing part: when we ran emergency toxicology panels, we found massive, lethal doses of tetrodotoxin combined with high-grade potassium chloride in her bloodstream." My blood ran ice-cold. "Tetrodotoxin? That's pufferfish poison! Are you telling me she was poisoned?" Dr. Albright swallowed hard, shuffling papers on his desk. "Not just poisoned, Conrad. Someone administered a paralytic agent that lowered her life signs just enough to fool emergency responders into pronouncing her dead. But whoever did it miscalculated the dosage duration, or didn't expect her metabolism to process it slower in the cold basement. She woke up inside the coffin because her body was slowly metabolizing the toxin."

I slammed my fist onto the mahogany desk, shattering a ceramic pen holder. "Who had access to her? Who signed the initial death declaration?" Dr. Albright flinched, looking away guiltily. "I signed it... based on the vital logs provided by your home nurse, and... and authorized by your mother, Florence, who stated Vivienne had a history of heart weakness." The pieces of a monstrous puzzle began snapping into place with terrifying clarity. It wasn't a medical accident. It was a calculated, cold-blooded murder plot executed right inside my own home by people I trusted with my life. But before Dr. Albright could hand me the physical medical charts, his office phone rang shrilly. He picked it up, muttered a brief response, and his face turned the color of ash. "Mr. Pendelton... security just reported that someone broke into the hospital's central digital records archive a minute ago and wiped the preliminary toxicology database for Room 402. Vivienne's chart has been deleted from our system." I stood up slowly, a cold, dark fury washing over me. Someone inside this hospital—someone with administrative credentials—was working directly with the assassins who tried to bury my wife alive.
