Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confession**

By 1:00 a.m., the grand manor was finally quiet. The glittering lights of the chandeliers had been dimmed, replaced by the soft, warm glow of wall sconces along the hallways.
Gideon walked quietly down the east wing corridor toward Sage’s room. He pushed the door open a fraction of an inch, peeking inside. The pale yellow bedding caught the moonlight streaming through the window. Sage was curled into a tight ball, her breathing slow and even, her small hand still clutching the strap of the battered gray suitcase she refused to unpack.
A heavy ache squeezed Gideon’s chest. He had spent his entire life building an empire, protecting assets, and fighting corporate sharks, yet he had failed to protect this little girl from the very monsters living under his own roof. He stepped softly into the room, pulling a stray blanket up over her shoulder, and brushed a stray lock of dark hair away from her forehead.
"I'm sorry," Gideon whispered into the dark room, feeling a tear slip down his cheek. "I promise you, nobody will ever hurt you like that again."
"Daddy?"
Gideon froze, pulling his hand back. Sage’s big, dark eyes were open, blinking sleepily up at him in the dim light.
"Did they go away?" she asked softly, her voice small and fragile.
Gideon sat down on the edge of the mattress, pulling her gently into his arms. "Yes, sweetie. They’re gone. They won't ever be back here."
Sage buried her face against his chest, her small arms wrapping around his neck. "Are you going to send me back to the gray house now? Because I broke my dress."
The words struck Gideon like a physical blow. The 'gray house'—the institutional foster facility where she had spent the last year of her life before her lineage was finally verified through DNA testing. She still believed she was temporary. She still believed that one mistake, one ruined dress, would be enough to make him throw her away just like everyone else had.
"Listen to me, Sage," Gideon said fiercely, holding her close so she could feel the steady, unyielding beat of his heart. "This is your home. You never have to leave. You don't ever have to pack that suitcase again. Do you understand me?"
Sage sniffled, looking up at him with cautious, trembling hope. "Promise?"
"I promise," Gideon swore, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "On my life."
For the first time since she had arrived at Ashcombe Manor, Sage relaxed completely against him. Within minutes, her breathing deepened, and she drifted back into a peaceful, unbroken sleep.

Gideon sat there in the dark for a long time, watching over her, knowing that the battle for his family had only just begun—and he was ready to burn the whole world down to keep her safe.
