Chapter 2 - The Conspiracy of the Elite**

Downstairs, the ballroom had recovered its festive veneer, though the laughter carried a nervous, hollow edge. Guests whispered behind crystal flutes, glancing toward the grand staircase as if expecting a ghost to descend. Among them stood Clara Kessler, Gideon’s widowed sister-in-law, wearing a smug, diamond-encrusted smile that barely reached her cold eyes. Beside her stood Evelyn Sterling, adjusting the strap of her crimson gown, completely unfazed by the public cruelty she had just inflicted.
Clara took a sip of her champagne, leaning in close to Evelyn. "You laid it on a bit thick, didn't you? Gideon looked ready to commit murder."
"Gideon needs to be reminded of his place," Evelyn scoffed quietly, her lips barely moving. "He thinks because he inherited the Kessler manufacturing empire, he can just drag some unknown brat off the streets, declare her his legitimate heir, and rewrite our family trust without consulting the rest of us. If that little peasant gets her name on the primary deed, my husband's share of the estate shrinks by half. A little orange juice on her dress is a cheap price to pay for a warning."
What Clara and Evelyn did not know was that they were no longer speaking in an isolated vacuum. Every word of their conversation was being captured by the hyper-sensitive directional microphones hidden within the antique sconces—audio equipment Owen Faust had ordered installed across the entire estate three months prior, anticipating exactly this kind of corporate and social warfare.
In the subterranean security monitoring room beneath the manor, Gideon listened to every syllable through a pair of high-grade headphones. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked rhythmically beneath his left eye. He had spent the last forty-eight hours trying to protect Sage from a world she was too young to understand, while his own blood relatives were plotting her destruction behind velvet curtains.
"Mr. Kessler," Owen murmured from across the console, his fingers flying over a keyboard. "I’ve pulled up the financial records associated with Evelyn Sterling’s husband's firm, Sterling Holdings. As suspected, they are currently leveraged to the absolute limit. They need Kessler Industries to approve a multi-million-dollar sub-contract renewal next week to avoid bankruptcy."
Gideon stood up slowly, straightening the lapels of his dark suit. The sadness he had felt upstairs in Sage’s room had completely evaporated, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.
"Cancel the sub-contract," Gideon said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "In fact, freeze all active accounts linked to Sterling Holdings immediately. And prepare a formal legal audit of Clara’s trust disbursements for the past five years. If she embezzled a single cent from the minor accounts, I want her indicted before sunrise."
"And Evelyn?" Owen asked.
May you like
"Throw them out," Gideon said coldly. "Not through the front doors. Have security escort them out through the mudroom exit, into the freezing rain, exactly the way they made my daughter feel."
