Chapter 13 - The Echo of the Mountains

Later that evening, after the crowds had cleared and the base settled into a peaceful twilight, Chloe and I walked out toward the edge of the firing range where it all began.
The distant peaks of the Coyote Mountains glowed with the fiery amber hues of the setting sun, casting long, dramatic shadows across the desert floor. The wind had died down to a gentle, cooling whisper.
Chloe set her equipment case down on the concrete barrier, resting her hand lightly on the composite stock of a brand-new, customized Barrett M107 rifle—the official sidearm of her new research detachment.
"You know," Chloe said softly, staring out across the vast, empty expanse of the canyon. "A few months ago, everyone out here thought I was just a diversity quota who couldn't handle the pressure. They thought distance was an insurmountable barrier."
"They were measuring your worth with a ruler," I replied quietly, leaning against the concrete barrier beside her. "They should have been measuring your mind."
She turned her head, offering a warm, genuine smile. "Thank you, Master Chief. For not letting me quit when things got heavy."
"I didn't do anything, kid," I said, tipping my cover back. "You carried yourself across the finish line all on your own."

Out in the distance, the wind swept softly through the sagebrush, carrying the faint, timeless echo of the desert. It was a place where weakness was crushed, but true excellence was forged in fire.
And as we stood there together under the spreading twilight, we both knew that her story was only just beginning.
