Chapter 11 - The Pentagon Summons

Two weeks after the confrontation at the gate, an official, high-priority encrypted dispatch arrived directly from the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Colonel Vance called Chloe and me into his command office first thing in the morning. The air in the room was electric, carrying the weight of a monumental turning point.
"Well, Henderson," Colonel Vance said, sliding an official folio across his desk, bearing the crimson wax seal of the Department of Defense. "It appears your little long-range demonstration has made quite an impression all the way up the chain of command."
Chloe looked down at the folio, opening it cautiously. "What is this, sir?"
"It’s a direct commission assignment," Vance announced with a proud, approving grin. "The Pentagon is establishing a new, elite joint-services long-range tactical research and reconnaissance detachment. They want you—not as a basic recruit, but as a technical lead and warrant officer candidate—to help design the next generation of ballistic doctrine for the entire United States armed forces."
I stared at the papers, a wave of immense pride washing over me. From an underdog recruit fighting against institutional hazing to the lead architect of military marksmanship doctrine in less than a month. It was an unprecedented leap.
"What about Apex Tactical?" Chloe asked, keeping her composure steady.
May you like
"Apex tried to leverage federal oversight boards to block your assignment," Vance said grimly. "They claimed you were an unverified security risk. But thanks to the thorough audit trail Master Chief and I compiled regarding their industrial sabotage and harassment campaign, the Inspector General’s office has launched a full-scale federal investigation into Apex Tactical. Their government contracts are being terminated as we speak."
The dark cloud that had hovered over her training journey finally vanished completely, replaced by the bright, unyielding promise of an extraordinary future.
