Chapter 5 - Queen of the Underworld Empire

Six months later, the Chicago Tribune’s front-page headline read: The Renaissance of Vance Enterprises: How Elena Moretti Built the Most Powerful Architectural Conglomerate in the Midwest.

The grand opening gala of the newly constructed Moretti-Vance Tower downtown was an event for the history books. Governors, international investors, and elite philanthropists packed the sunlit glass atrium to capacity. But nobody was looking at the politicians. All eyes were fixed on the center staircase.

Elena Moretti descended the steps wearing a breathtaking, custom-designed emerald gown that shimmered with hundreds of hand-stitched crystals. Her posture was confident, her smile radiant, and her eyes sparkling with absolute triumph.

Waiting for her at the bottom of the stairs stood Dante. He wore a tailored charcoal-grey suit, his silver-threaded tie impeccably straight, looking every bit the ruthless underworld king—yet the look he gave his wife was one of absolute, unconditional adoration.

As Elena reached the final step, Dante stepped forward, offering his hand. She took it without hesitation, and he pulled her smoothly into his arms, dipping her slightly in a classic ballroom embrace as the entire room erupted into thunderous applause.

From the upper VIP balcony, little touches of domestic peace had finally bled into the Moretti empire. Though Dante’s syndicate remained untouchable and feared across the underworld, their private life was filled with quiet mornings, whispered promises, and a love forged in the fires of betrayal.

Julian Montgomery was currently serving a fifteen-year federal sentence in a maximum-security penitentiary across state lines—completely forgotten by the society he had once tried to rule.

Dante leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to Elena’s temple as the camera flashes blinded them from every angle.

"Penny for your thoughts, my queen," Dante murmured against her ear with a rare, devastating smile.

Elena looked out across the glittering skyline of the city she had once been cast out of, now standing proudly at the very top of the world with the most dangerous man in America wrapped around her finger.

"I was just thinking," Elena whispered back, her eyes twinkling with mischief, "that contract marriage turned out to be the best investment I ever made."

Dante chuckled—a rich, dark sound that vibrated straight through her soul—and pulled her tighter against his chest. "Good thing there's no expiration date on forever."
