Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage and the Iron Queen

The Moretti estate on the outskirts of Lake Michigan was less of a home and more of a fortress disguised as a Renaissance palace. High iron gates, perimeter guards, and state-of-the-art security systems surrounded the sprawling mansion. When Elena stepped across the threshold in a custom-fitted crimson silk gown provided by Dante’s personal stylists, the heavy atmosphere of the underworld closed in around her.

"Welcome home, Mrs. Moretti," the lead housekeeper, a formidable older woman named Beatrice, murmured with a respectful dip of her head. "The Don expects you in the private study."

Elena walked down the dimly lit hallway, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor. She pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of Dante’s study to find him standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, pouring amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler. He didn't turn around as she entered.

"Word of our sudden marriage has already reached the Chicago syndicate," Dante said, swirling the liquor. "Tomorrow night is the annual charity gala at the Drake Hotel. Julian Montgomery will be there, flaunting your stolen company like a prized trophy. Are you prepared to face him?"

Elena walked right up to the mahogany desk, planting her palms flat on the wood as she stared fiercely at his back. "I'm not the scared girl he threw out into the rain, Dante. Let him look."

Dante finally turned, his mercury eyes sweeping over her with a sudden, intense heat that made her breath hitch. There was no mockery in his gaze—only a dangerous, calculating respect. "Good. Because in my world, weakness is a death sentence. Show them what happens when a Moretti takes the throne."

The next evening, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was blindingly bright, filled with glittering chandeliers, expensive champagne, and the crème de la crème of Chicago’s high society. When the double doors swung open and the announcer bellowed, "Dante Moretti, Don of the Moretti Syndicate, and his wife, Elena Moretti!" the entire room went dead silent.

Elena descended the sweeping staircase on Dante’s arm. She moved with absolute, regal grace, her crimson gown shimmering under the lights, her posture unyielding. Whispers erupted instantly through the crowd.

Standing near the buffet table, Julian Montgomery choked on his champagne, his eyes nearly popping out of his skull as he stared at the woman he had discarded just forty-eight hours ago. Beside him stood his new fiancée, wearing one of Elena’s old, altered dresses, looking sick with jealousy.

Julian pushed through the crowd, unable to contain his shock and rage. He stepped directly into Dante and Elena’s path, blocking their way with a fake, tight-lipped smile.

"Elena?" Julian hissed, his voice trembling with disbelief. "What kind of sick game are you playing? How on earth did a washed-up charity case like you hook a monster like Moretti?"

Before Elena could utter a single word, Dante stepped forward, smoothly positioning himself in front of her like an impenetrable wall of dark steel. The temperature in the room plummeted twenty degrees.

"Watch your tongue, boy," Dante whispered, his voice dangerously soft, carrying the terrifying weight of a death warrant. "You're speaking to my wife. And as for her assets... check your corporate accounts before you speak to us again."
