Sold to the Underworld King / Chapter 1 / 5

Chapter 1 - The Rain-Soaked Alley and the Shadow of the Don

The neon lights of downtown Chicago bled into the wet asphalt, casting an eerie, bruised purple glow over the narrow alleyway behind the city's premier auction house. Elena Vance pressed her back against the cold, damp brick wall, her breath coming in ragged, freezing gasps. Her designer dress—bought for her engagement party just three months ago—was stained with mud and torn at the hem. Only an hour earlier, her fiancé, Julian, had publicly humiliated her in front of the city's financial elite, announcing that he was transferring all her family’s remaining corporate assets to his new mistress before throwing her out onto the street with zero dollars to her name.

She was completely ruined. Her parents were dead, her inheritance was stolen, and the debt collectors were closing in like wolves.

Then came the sound of polished Italian leather stepping smoothly through the puddles.

A dozen armed men in tailored black suits materialized silently from the shadows, forming a rigid human wall. In the center of them stood Dante Moretti. The underworld king. A man whose name was whispered in terrified tones across every boardroom and back-alley syndicate from New York to Sicily. His face was a masterpiece of cold, symmetrical danger, framed by jet-black hair and piercing eyes the color of liquid mercury. Rumor had it that Dante didn’t negotiate; he simply eliminated.

"Elena Vance," Dante’s voice was a low, velvet baritone that vibrated right through the damp air, completely devoid of warmth. "You're standing on my property, looking rather lost for someone who was supposed to be the belle of the ball tonight."

Elena lifted her chin, refusing to shrink beneath his terrifying gaze. She had nothing left to lose. "If you're here to finish me off for trespassing, make it quick. I've had a really long day."

A single, sharp corner of Dante’s mouth twitched upward in a humorless smirk. He stepped closer, the scent of expensive sandalwood and gunmetal wrapping around her like a shroud. "I don't kill stray cats, Elena. I adopt them. Especially when they have a fiery grudge against the men who betrayed them. Julian Montgomery just transferred your family’s shipping empire into his own pocket. How would you like to see him burn?"

"What's the catch?" Elena demanded, her voice sharp despite her trembling knees.

"My mother’s dying wish was to see me married and settled before she passes. The mob council is questioning my authority, claiming I'm unstable," Dante said smoothly, pulling a crisp, multi-page legal document from his breast pocket. "You become my contract wife for one year. You play the part of the devoted, untouchable mafia queen in public. In exchange, I clear your debts, restore your family name, and hand you Julian Montgomery on a silver platter."

Elena looked at the contract, then up into those lethal mercury eyes. She didn't hesitate. "Where do I sign?"
