Chapter 5 - The Billion-Dollar Ring

The heavy steel security shutters slowly retracted, letting the moonlight flood back into the wrecked ballroom. The elite guests were whispering frantically among themselves, staring at me as if I were a ghost who had suddenly manifested out of thin air.

Dante walked slowly across the polished marble floor. Every eye in the room followed his movement. He bypassed Sienna entirely, ignoring her pathetic whimpers as she reached out a manicured hand toward his ankle. "Dante... baby... I can explain... it was a trap, they forced me..." she cried.

Dante didn't even look down at her. He walked right past her, stopping just two feet away from me.

The silence in the room was deafening. You could hear a pin drop on a carpet.

Dante reached into the pocket of his tailored jacket. He didn't pull out a gun. Instead, he pulled out a small, heavy velvet box—the exact same velvet box that had arrived on Tuesday morning with the multi-million-dollar engagement ring meant for Sienna.

He popped the lid open. The massive diamond caught the overhead light, throwing brilliant, blinding rainbows across the room.

Sienna gasped, her face turning an ugly shade of purple as realization struck her like a freight train. "Dante? What... what are you doing? That's my ring!"

Dante finally turned his head slightly toward Sienna, his voice dropping to a terrifying, arctic whisper. "That ring was meant for a partner, Sienna. Not a parasite who sells me out to the highest bidder at the first sign of trouble. You're finished. Get out of my penthouse before I have Viktor throw you off the balcony."

Sienna burst into hysterical tears, scrambling to her feet and fleeing toward the elevators with her disgraced family advisors trailing behind her like whipped dogs.

The ballroom was left in stunned, breathless silence.

Dante turned back to me. He stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the intense, magnetic heat radiating from him. He reached into the velvet box, lifted the massive, blinding diamond ring, and took my right hand in his. My hand—the hand scarred from a kitchen accident, calloused from scrubbing marble floors and washing dishes.

He didn't hesitate. He slid the billion-dollar ring slowly, deliberately onto my ring finger. It fit with absolute, miraculous perfection.

A collective, audible gasp echoed through the crowd of billionaires and crime lords. The invisible housekeeper had just been crowned queen of the underworld.

"They humiliated you because they were blind," Dante said, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made my breath catch. "They thought you were invisible because they were too arrogant to see real power when it stood right in front of them. You saved my life tonight, Mara. You saved my empire."

I looked down at the blinding diamond sparkling on my finger, then back up into his dark, fierce eyes. For three years, I had hidden in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to reclaim my life. The waiting was over.

"I told you, Mr. Marcel," I whispered softly, a confident, knowing smile touching my lips as I squeezed his hand back. "Fear doesn't pay my rent. But loyalty... loyalty is something you have to earn."

Dante let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound that nobody in this room had ever heard before—and pulled me close against his chest as the flashbulbs of the surviving paparazzi began to pop once again. The plain housekeeper was gone. From this night forward, the underworld belonged to us.
