Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Penthouse

By Friday night, the penthouse was a hurricane of frantic activity. Event coordinators shouted orders, florists rushed in and out, and security guards checked earpieces with grim expressions. Sienna spent the entire afternoon screeching at Petra, her personal assistant, because the imported French hand soap in the second-floor powder room was the wrong shade of ivory.

I moved through the chaos like a ghost, armed with a silver tray, collecting empty champagne glasses and empty-headed complaints. Nobody looked at me. To them, I was just a uniform. But my eyes were wide, scanning every dark corner, every shadow, and every exit route. That fake florist wasn't the only anomaly. I had spotted two men in the security control room who didn't belong on the roster, wearing counterfeit badges. The perimeter had been compromised.

As I stepped into the dimly lit hallway near Dante Marcel’s private study, the heavy oak door was cracked open just an inch. I paused, my breath catching in my throat. I shouldn't have listened. Every fiber of my training told me to walk away, to keep my eyes on the floor and my mouth shut. But curiosity, born from a deep, gnawing sense of danger, drew me closer.

Inside, Dante Marcel stood by the window, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand. He looked exhausted. The sharp lines of his jaw were tight, and his broad shoulders carried the weight of an empire that was slowly being undermined by traitors within his own inner circle. Standing opposite him was his head of security, a hulking man named Viktor, whose face was pale.

"The shipment from the docks was intercepted, Boss," Viktor was saying, his voice low and strained. "We lost three million in cash and the entire cargo. It wasn't an accident. Someone leaked the route."

Dante didn't turn around immediately. When he finally did, his dark, piercing eyes held a chill that could freeze fire. "And who knew the route, Viktor?"

"Only a select few," Viktor stammered. "Management... and... and Sienna’s family advisors."

Dante let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "My beloved fiancée’s family is trying to bleed me dry before the ink on the marriage contract is even dry. They think I'm weak."

"What do we do?" Viktor asked.

"We play the game," Dante said softly, stepping toward his desk. "Let them think they're winning until tomorrow night. At the engagement party, I’ll cut the head off the snake."

I stepped back silently into the shadows, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The stakes were far higher than I had imagined. It wasn't just a corporate merger; it was an execution waiting to happen. And as I turned to walk away, I accidentally brushed my elbow against a heavy antique vase resting on a mahogany console table. It wobbled, tilting dangerously toward the floor.

Before it could smash into a million pieces and alert them, a large, warm hand shot out from the darkness, catching the vase inches from the marble floor with absolute, effortless precision.

I froze. Slowly, I lifted my eyes.

Dante Marcel was standing right beside me. He hadn't made a single sound as he approached. Up close, he was towering, imposing, and overwhelmingly intense. His dark eyes locked onto mine, stripping away years of carefully constructed invisibility in a single, terrifying heartbeat.

"You have very quiet feet, Mara," Dante murmured, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Were you listening to my private conversation?"
