Chapter 4 - The Courtroom’s Shadow

The family courtroom on the third floor of the municipal building smelled of floor wax, old paper, and institutional despair.
Nora sat at the defense table beside Luca, her posture straight, wearing a sharp navy blazer that commanded quiet dignity. Across the aisle sat Richard, flanked by a high-priced attorney whose silk tie cost more than Nora’s entire wardrobe used to.
Richard looked smug. He leaned back in his chair, whispering something to his lawyer and shooting a patronizing, pitying glance toward Nora. He still saw her as the quiet, dowdy housewife he had humiliated over burnt toast and credit card bills.
"Case number 24-CH-8902, In re: The Custody and Domestic Status of Minor Child Leo Moretti," the judge droned, adjusting his glasses. "Counsel, you may present your arguments regarding the emergency welfare petition."
Richard’s attorney stood up, smoothing his jacket. "Your Honor, my client, Mr. Richard Vance, brings this motion on behalf of public safety and familial concern. The respondent, Mrs. Nora Vance-Moretti, is currently residing in an environment controlled by a known syndicate leader, surrounded by criminal elements, exposed to extreme psychological distress. She was manipulated during a period of acute financial vulnerability into a sham marriage."
Nora’s hands clenched into fists beneath the table.
Before she could speak, a large, warm hand covered her knuckles, anchoring her. She looked sideways. Luca hadn't moved an inch, his face carved from stone, but his touch radiated an unshakeable, grounding strength.
"Furthermore, Your Honor," the lawyer continued, holding up a stack of printed social media photos and old text messages. "We have documentation proving Mrs. Moretti’s history of severe anxiety, depressive episodes, and clinical dependency—proving she is entirely unfit to nurture a traumatized child."
The courtroom murmured.
Luca stood up slowly.
The movement was so controlled, so absolute, that the entire room went dead silent. Even the judge blinked, looking up at the towering mafia boss who commanded more actual power in the city than anyone sitting on the bench.
"Your Honor," Luca spoke, his deep, resonant voice filling the room without a single trace of anger, carrying the terrifying weight of absolute authority. "My wife’s medical history is a private matter unlawfully obtained by corporate espionage. But if we are discussing fitness... let us discuss the man who abandoned his wife the moment her postpartum body didn't match the glossy magazine covers in his office."
Richard flinched, sitting up straight, his face turning pale.
"Let us discuss," Luca continued, taking a slow step forward, "how Mr. Vance spent three years systematically eroding a good woman's self-worth so she would never realize her own strength. And let us discuss what happens when a court attempts to separate a child from the only mother who has ever held him through the dark."
The judge cleared his throat nervously, looking down at the legal brief before him. "Mr. Moretti, threats—"
"It is not a threat, Your Honor," Luca interrupted smoothly, pulling a crisp, sealed federal document from his inner pocket and placing it on the table. "It is a matter of public record. The financial backing behind Mr. Vance’s sudden legal crusade is being funded through shell corporations tied directly to an ongoing SEC investigation into insider trading—managed by the exact same firm representing him today."
