Chapter 10 - Beyond the Contract

Three months later, the cherry blossoms in the courtyard of the Moretti estate were in full bloom, painting the stone pathways in shades of soft pink and white.
The legal battles with Richard were entirely over. Facing federal conspiracy charges and total financial ruin, Richard had signed away all remaining claims, vanishing into obscurity somewhere on the West Coast. The past was finally dead and buried.
In the center of the courtyard, little Leo was running after a red rubber ball, his infectious laughter echoing off the brick walls—a sound that used to be a rare miracle, and now filled the house every single day.
Nora sat on the wrought-iron bench beneath the trellis, wearing a simple sundress, her sketchbook open in her lap as she sketched the rolling hills beyond the estate gates.
Footsteps crunched on the gravel behind her.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest. Luca rested his chin on her shoulder, looking down at her drawing.
"You're making me look far too soft," Luca teased gently, a low rumble of amusement in his chest.
"I'm drawing you accurately," Nora smiled, leaning back against him, turning her head to press a soft kiss to his cheek. "A fierce protector with a very soft spot for little boys and clumsy artists."
Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, thick legal document tied with a red silk ribbon. He placed it gently on top of her sketchbook.
Nora frowned, looking down at it. "What's this? Another contract?"
"Open it," Luca instructed quietly, his arms tightening around her.
Nora untied the ribbon and unfolded the stiff paper. Her eyes scanned the text, and the breath caught in her throat.
It wasn't a domestic arrangement. It wasn't a conditional agreement with an expiration date or a clause about emotional detachment. It was a permanent adoption decree for Leo, legally naming Nora as his mother—followed immediately by a marriage certificate bearing neither a syndicate stamp nor a legal loophole, signed by a civil magistrate who had come to the estate that very morning.
"Luca..." Nora whispered, tears springing to her eyes. "You didn't have to..."
"The old contract had clauses, conditions, and exit strategies," Luca interrupted, his voice dropping into a fierce, tender whisper as he turned her around to face him. "I didn't want an exit strategy, Nora. I wanted forever."
He reached out, slipping a simple, elegant platinum band onto her left ring finger right beside the simple silver band she wore from their wedding day.

"No terms. No conditions," Luca said, looking deep into her green eyes with absolute, unwavering devotion. "Just us."
Nora threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his chest, letting out a laugh of pure, unadulterated joy that soared up into the spring air, welcomed by the sunshine and the bright, happy laughter of their son playing just a few feet away.
