Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Contracted Vow

The cold marble floors of the Moretti estate always felt like they were trying to freeze Nora from the inside out. Standing in the cavernous, vaulted foyer, she stared down at her reflection in the polished brass inlay of the entry table. Her hair, once constantly criticized by her ex-husband Richard for not being "styled like a trophy wife," was pulled back into a simple, practical twist. Her clothes were modest, clean, but cheap.

Yet, as Nora looked at her eyes—no longer hollow, no longer shadowed by the constant, suffocating terror of not being enough—she realized she didn't hate the woman staring back at her anymore.

"Nora?"

She turned to see Luca Moretti descending the grand staircase. He wore a dark, unbuttoned vest over a crisp white shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and faint, jagged scars from a life fought in the dark corners of Chicago. His slate-gray eyes, sharp enough to cut glass, softened instantly the moment they landed on her.

"Leo just woke up," Nora said quietly, her voice steady. "He had another nightmare about the courtyard gate. But he drank his warm milk. He's sleeping again."

Luca stepped off the final stair, closing the distance between them with a quiet, predatory grace that never quite faded, even inside his own home. He stopped an inch away, his hand coming up to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"You haven't slept, Nora," Luca murmured, his voice a deep, gravelly register that sent a warm, dangerous shiver down her spine.

"Neither have you," she replied softly, looking up into his face.

Their marriage was born out of ink and desperation. When Luca had posted the anonymous advertisement for a stepmother to soothe his traumatized four-year-old son, Nora had been drowning in debt, discarded by Richard like a broken appliance because her postpartum weight and simple appearance didn't fit his corporate social climbing. She had signed the contract expecting a transactional arrangement: a roof over her head, protection from her ex-husband's legal harassment, and a salary in exchange for healing a mute, terrified little boy.

She hadn't factored in Luca. She hadn't factored in the way a feared mafia boss could look at her with such fierce, unspoken reverence, treating her scars as if they were sacred text.

"The contract states we keep our distance emotionally," Luca whispered, his thumb lightly tracing her jawline, lingering over the skin where Richard’s cruel words used to sting. "Every day I sign that paper, Nora, I break my own rule."

"Maybe," Nora whispered back, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Maybe rules were meant to be broken."

Before Luca could pull her into his arms, a sudden, sharp rap echoed against the heavy oak front door.

Three sharp strikes. A rhythm only used by the syndicate’s inner circle.

Luca’s hand dropped from her face instantly, his posture stiffening into absolute, lethal granite. The fragile, domestic bubble they had built over the last three months shattered in a single heartbeat.
