Chapter 4 - The Collapse of the House of Cards

The heavy metal doors of the ICU burst open outward, and Detective Rachel Vance stepped directly into the doorway, flanked by two uniformed county sheriff deputies with their hands resting calmly on their holstered sidearms.
"Luca Vance, don't even think about testing your cardio," Rachel said calmly, holding up a pair of polished steel handcuffs as she blocked the exit. "You are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, corporate fraud, and unlawful distribution of controlled substances."
Luca slammed to a halt, his hands twitching nervously at his sides as the deputies closed in on him from behind, grabbing his arms and twisting them expertly behind his back with practiced efficiency.
"This is a mistake! You have no proof! It's a conspiracy!" Luca shrieked, thrashing uselessly against the grip of the officers as they forced him down against the sterile floor. "Ivan, you son of a bitch! We were brothers! We grew up together!"
"We stopped being brothers the moment you decided to use my trauma bay as your personal execution chamber," Ivan replied coldly, standing over him with his arms crossed, watching the man he had known since childhood get dragged out in disgrace.
As the deputies hauled Luca out into the hallway—his muffled curses echoing down the linoleum corridor—Rachel lingered for a moment, stepping over to the side of Jessi’s bed.
"You're going to need to sign a formal victim statement and financial freeze order later this afternoon, Mrs. Vance," Rachel said gently, her professional demeanor softening slightly. "But you're safe now. He'll never be able to come near you again."
Jessi closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like the heaviest weight of her life finally lifting off her chest. "Thank you, Detective... and thank you, Ivan."
"Just rest," Ivan murmured, squeezing her hand warmly. "The worst part is over."
By evening, the fallout of the arrest had completely dismantled Luca Vance’s carefully constructed empire. News vans crowded outside all three of his retail pharmacies as state health inspectors revoked his licenses indefinitely. Local news networks ran breaking specials detailing the shocking betrayal of a prominent pharmacist attempting to murder his wife with a rare pharmaceutical patch.
Sarah Moore, facing decades in federal prison for conspiracy and drug trafficking, signed a full, unvarnished confession detailing every single instruction Luca had given her over the past six months—including how he had slipped the lethal Dexopraline patch onto Jessi’s skin while she was fast asleep after a grueling family dinner.
Inside the private office of the hospital, Ivan sat alone at his desk reviewing surgical charts when a soft knock sounded at the door.
Rachel stepped inside, holding two hot cups of black coffee, placing one down on the desk in front of him.
"Well, the prosecutor just reviewed the file," Rachel said, leaning against the edge of the desk. "With Sarah's confession, the pharmacy audit logs, and your medical testimony pulling the exact poison off her body, Luca is looking at consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His assets are completely frozen, and Jessi has already filed for an expedited emergency divorce, reclaiming full ownership of her family estate."
Ivan took a slow sip of the hot coffee, letting out a deep sigh of relief. "It’s incredible how fast a forty-year friendship can burn down to ash when you scratch beneath the surface and find pure rot."

"You saved her life, Ivan," Rachel reminded him softly, looking him square in the eye. "If you hadn't recognized that patch in the first two seconds of trauma surgery, he would have gotten away with the perfect crime."
"I just did my job," Ivan replied quietly. "The rest was just divine intervention."
