Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Mistress

The morning sun cast a pale, weak light over the bustling streets of downtown Minneapolis as Detective Rachel Vance pulled her unmarked cruiser directly in front of Vance Family Pharmacy #1. The security gates were just beginning to roll upward, and the faint smell of industrial cleaning fluid drifted out onto the sidewalk.
Rachel didn't wait for the formal opening hours. She flashed her gold badge directly at the startled young pharmacy technician unlocking the front glass door, pushed past him with unyielding authority, and strode straight toward the back dispensary counter where restricted medications were locked away.
"Federal and State health compliance audit," Rachel announced, placing an emergency search warrant flat onto the metal counter. "Step away from the terminal, lock all inventory logs, and hand me the restricted compounding registry for the past six months."
The young technician turned pale, his hands hovering nervously over the keyboard. "I... I need to call Mr. Vance. He owns the—"
"Mr. Vance is currently dealing with a homicide investigation involving his wife," Rachel interrupted, her voice cutting through the quiet pharmacy like a razor blade. "If you touch a single key to delete or alter a database log, I will arrest you as an accessory to attempted murder right now. Open the compounding log for Dexopraline."
Swallowing hard, the technician nodded frantically and typed a rapid sequence into the master terminal. A secure digital ledger appeared on the screen, detailing every batch, distribution, and patient prescription filled for restricted compounds over the last year.
Rachel’s eyes scanned down the columns, her finger stopping dead at a specific entry dated three weeks prior.
Compound ID: DX-9042.
Quantity: Ten Transdermal Micro-Patches.
Authorized By: L. Vance, PharmD (Master Inventory Override).
Dispensed To: Private Research / Off-Site Clinical Trial (Unlisted).
"An unlisted off-site trial," Rachel muttered under her breath, a grim smile forming on her lips. "Convenient."
She pulled out her department phone and snapped high-resolution photos of the screen, downloading the entire digital audit trail onto a secure encrypted flash drive. But as she scrolled further down the access logs, she noticed something even more interesting—a secondary user profile that had accessed the secure inventory vault using Luca’s master credentials.
User Profile: S. Moore.
"Who is S. Moore?" Rachel asked, turning her sharp gaze back to the terrified technician.
"That's... that's Sarah Moore," the technician stammered, pointing nervously toward the staff breakroom in the back. "She’s Mr. Vance’s executive assistant and primary inventory manager. She handles all his private corporate scheduling and off-site supply orders."
Rachel didn't waste a second. She marched past the counter, pushed open the breakroom door, and found a young, impeccably dressed woman sitting at a small laminate table, clutching a steaming paper cup of coffee with shaking hands.
Sarah Moore looked up, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she saw the detective's badge.
"Sarah Moore?" Rachel asked, stepping into the tiny room and blocking the exit.
"Yes?" the woman squeaked.
"You might want to sit down and finish that coffee," Rachel said smoothly. "Because we need to talk about why your login credentials were used to pull ten lethal Dexopraline patches from the safe—and why your name is listed as the primary leaseholder on a luxury downtown apartment rented under a shell corporation owned by Luca Vance."
Sarah dropped her coffee cup. The dark liquid splattered across the linoleum floor, but she didn't even notice. The color completely drained from her face as the terrifying reality of her situation came crashing down around her.

"I didn't... I didn't know what he was going to do with them," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking as tears welled up in her eyes. "He told me it was for a private medical study. He swore to me it was completely legal!"
"Tell it to the grand jury, sweetheart," Rachel said, snapping a pair of steel handcuffs onto the young woman's wrists. "Your boss just tried to murder his wife, and you just handed him the weapon."
