Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Execution

The crisp morning sun of Friday cast long, sharp shadows across the polished glass facade of the Vale Corporation headquarters in downtown Manhattan.

Inside the grand executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, the atmosphere was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Twelve members of the board of directors sat in uncomfortable silence around the massive mahogany table. At the head of the table sat Adrian Vale, his hair slightly disheveled, his expensive Italian suit looking as though he had slept in it during the emergency red-eye flight back from New York after his jet was forced to land.

Standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows, bathed in morning sunlight, was Marcus Vance. The silver-haired, impeccably tailored lawyer looked entirely relaxed, casually sipping a black coffee while flipping through a leather-bound portfolio.

The double doors swung open, and Evelyn Mercer Vale walked into the boardroom.

She wasn't wearing mourning black or looking like a panicked, abandoned wife. She wore a tailored crimson maternity dress that radiated undeniable power and absolute authority, her head held high, her steps measured and calm.

Every single board member stood up instinctively as she entered the room.

Adrian remained seated in his executive chair, his knuckles white as he gripped the armrests, his eyes burning with a mixture of furious betrayal and raw, unadulterated shock.

“Evelyn,” Adrian growled, his voice trembling with suppressed rage. “What the hell is the meaning of this circus?”

Evelyn didn't even glance at him as she walked gracefully to the opposite end of the mahogany table, taking the seat directly facing her husband—the seat that historically belonged to the primary voting stakeholder of the combined Mercer-Vale alliance.

She placed her hands flat on the table, looking around the room at the stunned executives.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” Evelyn announced, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with absolute command. “Effective 8:00 AM today, pursuant to Section 9 of the historic 2017 Grayport Harbor Treaty and backed by emergency federal asset freezes, all executive voting rights, operational control, and financial assets previously held by Adrian Vale are hereby suspended due to gross breach of marital fidelity, corporate malfeasance, and willful violation of regional non-aggression covenants.”

A collective gasp echoed around the boardroom.

“You can’t do that!” Adrian bellowed, slamming his fist down onto the mahogany surface so hard the water glasses rattled. “This is my company! I built this empire from a single warehouse! You’re just a beneficiary!”

Marcus Vance stepped away from the window, walking slowly toward Adrian with a predator’s smile.

“Sit down, Mr. Vale,” Marcus said smoothly, tossing a thick stack of certified legal documents directly onto the table in front of him. “Let me educate you on the fine print you were too arrogant to read when you signed your life away nine years ago. Section 9 explicitly dictates that any material breach of marital sanctity committed by a Vale against a Mercer constitutes an immediate hostile forfeiture of corporate voting control, reverting all primary assets back to the Mercer trust to preserve regional stability.”

Adrian stared down at the documents, his eyes darting frantically across the legal terminology. Every single asset he owned—his shipping fleets, his real estate portfolios, his offshore accounts, his shares in Grayport Harbor—was listed under strict receivership control assigned directly to Evelyn Mercer Vale.

He looked up across the table, his face turning pale and ashen.

“Evie...” Adrian whispered, his arrogant composure completely shattered, his voice cracking with humiliation. “Please... we can talk about this. Drop the injunctions. Let’s settle this privately like adults. Don't take everything I’ve worked my entire life to build.”

Evelyn leaned back in her chair, resting her hands gently over the mound of her stomach where their son was quietly resting.

“When I stood on that dark airfield last night, Adrian, watching you walk away with your mistress while my unborn son kicked against my ribs, you had a choice,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a chilling, quiet whisper that echoed in the silent room. “You chose your arrogance. You chose your mistress. You chose to believe I was nothing more than a trapped decoration in your grand life.”

She picked up a pen from the table, sliding it across the polished wood toward him.

“Now, sign the expedited dissolution papers, hand over the keys to the Manhattan penthouse, and get out of my sight before my lawyers strip away the clothes on your back.”
