Chapter 2 - The Setup in Motion

The color drained instantly from Adrian’s face, leaving him looking older than his forty-one years.
“What lawyer?” he demanded, his voice dropping its polished veneer as genuine panic flared in his chest.
Evelyn almost laughed out loud. “Oh, darling. You’ll find out soon enough.”
“You filed court papers behind my back?” he stepped forward, grabbing the lapel of her coat.
“Not yet,” Evelyn replied smoothly, effortlessly swatting his hand away. “But the paperwork has been sitting in a secure lockbox for three weeks, waiting for you to cross one final line. And congratulations—you just crossed it.”
“Then don't do it,” Adrian blurted out, the words tumbling out of his mouth with uncharacteristic desperation.
The speed of his plea gave her all the confirmation she needed. It wasn't about love or saving their marriage; it was about exposure. A messy, high-stakes divorce proceeding would force an open audit of the Vale corporate empire, exposing millions in offshore shell companies, secret real estate holdings, and illegal side-dealings he had meticulously hidden from his board of directors.
Adrian lunged forward again, trying to grip her upper arm. “Evie, stop this madness right now. I am thirty weeks pregnant—wait, you are thirty weeks pregnant. We cannot do this.”
Evelyn stepped backward out of his reach, her eyes flashing with cold fire. “I drove out to this godforsaken airfield tonight because I wanted to give the man I married one final, honest opportunity to look his wife in the eye and decide what kind of human being he actually was.”
“Evie—please—listen to reason—”
“You made your choice, Adrian,” she said, turning her back on him with military precision.
Without looking back, Evelyn walked briskly across the tarmac toward her waiting SUV, her heels clicking rhythmically against the cold concrete. Behind her, she could hear Adrian shouting her name, his voice echoing frantically across the empty airfield, but she didn't slow her pace for a single second.
She slid into the driver’s seat of her Range Rover, locked the heavy doors, and let out a long, shuddering breath that felt like expelling years of poison from her lungs.
Her phone buzzed violently in the center console.
It was an incoming call from Marcus Vance—senior partner at Vance, Sterling & Cole, the most feared corporate litigation firm in New York City, and the very man her father had retained years ago as a contingency plan against Vale treachery.
Evelyn swiped the screen and tapped speakerphone.
“Evening, Evelyn,” Marcus’s smooth, gravelly voice filled the quiet cabin. “I take it from the timing of your call that our maritime friend chose the wrong side of the runway?”
“He boarded the Gulfstream with his mistress, Marcus,” Evelyn said steadily, resting a hand on her stomach as her son settled down. “The trap is officially sprung. Is everything in place?”
On the other end of the line, Marcus let out a low, appreciative chuckle. It was the sound of a master chess player watching his opponent walk blindly into checkmate.
“Everything is locked and loaded, my dear,” Marcus replied, the paper rustling in his office indicating he was reviewing the massive files spread across his desk. “The moment Adrian Vale’s private aircraft crosses state airspace and lands in Chicago, our federal injunctions will hit his corporate accounts simultaneously. By sunrise tomorrow, we won’t just be filing for divorce. We are freezing his primary operating capital, seizing majority voting shares in Grayport Harbor through pre-signed contingency deeds your father drafted, and filing an emergency asset-preservation lien that will lock up every single penny he owns.”
Evelyn stared out the frost-covered windshield at the flashing red beacon of the distant control tower.
“Make sure he feels every single inch of it, Marcus,” she whispered. “He thought I was trapped because of our name. Teach him what true isolation feels like.”
“Consider it done,” Marcus murmured. “Drive home safely, Evelyn. Your new life starts tonight.”

The call disconnected with a soft click.
Evelyn put the SUV into drive, navigated out of the airfield gates, and headed south toward Manhattan, her heart no longer heavy with grief, but burning with absolute, unyielding resolve.
