Chapter 3 - Landing in a Nightmare

Three hours later, high above the Midwest cloud cover, Gulfstream G650 registration N884TV cruised smoothly on autopilot through the dark night sky.

Inside the plush, wood-paneled cabin of the private jet, ambient lighting cast a warm, luxurious glow over the leather seating. A bottle of vintage Dom Pérignon sat chilling in a silver bucket on the mahogany side table.

Lauren Shaw was curled up on the velvet divan, scrolling mindlessly through her tablet, wearing a silk lounge set provided by the flight’s catering service.

Adrian Vale, however, was pacing back and forth across the narrow carpeted aisle like a caged predator. His phone had been buzzing intermittently with encrypted corporate alerts, but he had ignored them while taking off. Now, as the descent lights signaled their impending arrival at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, a heavy sense of impending doom settled in his gut.

He pulled out his phone, unlocked the screen, and tapped open his corporate banking app.

The screen flashed red.

Account Status: Restricted / Under Federal Review.

Adrian frowned, tapping furiously on his secondary operating account tied to his primary Delaware holding company.

Access Denied. Contact Corporate Legal.

“Damn it,” Adrian muttered under his breath, his thumb tapping the screen with increasing velocity.

“Is everything alright, Adrian?” Lauren asked, looking up from her tablet with a slight frown of concern. “You’ve been pacing for the last hour.”

“It’s nothing,” Adrian snapped defensively, his voice sharper than intended. “Just a glitch with our automated payroll servers in Virginia.”

Before Lauren could reply, the cabin captain’s voice crackled over the intercom.

“Mr. Vale, this is Captain Miller up front. We’ve just received our final approach clearance from O’Hare ground control, but... well, sir, you’re going to want to take a look at this teletype message coming through our private flight deck terminal.”

Adrian strode quickly toward the cockpit door, pulled it open, and stepped into the illuminated cockpit. “What is it, Captain? Weather delay?”

The co-pilot looked pale, slowly turning his head around to face his boss. “Uh, no, sir. It’s not weather. Air traffic control just handed us a mandatory diversion order directly from the Federal Marshals Service and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.”

Adrian’s breath hitched. “A diversion? We are cleared for Chicago.”

“Not anymore, Mr. Vale,” the captain said grimly, tapping the glowing printout on the dashboard. “Federal authorities have placed an emergency administrative hold on this aircraft’s registration and tail number. We are ordered to land immediately at Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York—and remain grounded upon arrival pending execution of civil asset forfeiture and marital estate restructuring motions.”

The cockpit instruments seemed to spin around Adrian’s head.

Civil asset forfeiture? Marital estate restructuring?

That wasn't standard divorce boilerplate. That was the legal equivalent of a tactical nuclear strike designed to decapitate a corporation in a single afternoon.

“Who signed the order?” Adrian rasped, his throat suddenly bone-dry.

The co-pilot squinted at the signature line at the bottom of the digital mandate. “Judge Evelyn Cross... backed by Marcus Vance of Vance, Sterling & Cole.”

The name hit Adrian like a physical blow to the chest.

Marcus Vance. The shark who had drafted the original Mercer-Vale peace treaty nine years ago—the very man who had embedded hidden execution clauses deep within the small print, designed to activate instantly if a Vale ever betrayed a Mercer bloodline.

He hadn't just lost a wife. He had walked straight into a multi-million-dollar trap carefully laid out years before he even bought his first luxury car.
