Chapter 7 - The Homecoming

Three days after the arrest, I stepped off the federal transport plane onto the private tarmac of the municipal airport in my home city.

The morning sun was warm and bright, a sharp contrast to the freezing, stormy Atlantic night that had almost ended my life. Waiting by the steps of the tarmac were two people I thought I would never see again.

My parents.

My mother—who had miraculously been discharged from the specialized medical clinic in Zurich where Claire had secretly had her sequestered under a false diagnosis—was standing upright, leaning on a cane but smiling through her tears. My father stood right beside her, his jaw set with a fierce, protective anger that made him look every bit the industrial titan he was.

As I reached the bottom of the metal stairs, my mother dropped her cane, threw her arms around my neck, and pulled me into a fierce, sobbing embrace.

"My baby," she choked out, burying her face in my shoulder. "My poor, brave baby. When the federal marshals called us from the ship... I thought I had lost you."

"I'm right here, Mom," I whispered, holding her just as tightly, letting the tears I had suppressed during the entire ordeal finally fall. "I'm right here."

My father stepped forward, wrapping his massive arms around both of us, his voice thick with emotion. "We heard the recordings, Rory. The attorney general briefed us on every detail. What you did out there... staying calm, gathering the evidence, playing dead while those monsters plotted... you saved not just your own life, but our entire family."

"They thought we were weak," I said, pulling back and looking my father straight in the eye with a cold, hardened resolve. "They thought because I was trusting, I was a victim. They were wrong."

"They were," my father agreed, a grim, satisfied smile touching his lips. "And now, it’s time to clean house."

As we walked toward the waiting black town car, my father handed me a heavy leather folder stamped with the seal of our family corporation's primary legal counsel.

"What's this?" I asked, sliding into the plush leather back seat.

"Your new title," my father said quietly. "Effective immediately, the board has voted unanimously to strip Claire of all executive voting rights, freeze all Sterling family assets, and appoint you as Chief Executive Officer of the Vance-Sterling Global Trust."

I opened the folder. My name was typed neatly across the primary shareholder certificate at the top of the page.

*Rory Vance.*
