Chapter 4 - Turning the Tables**

“They’re coming back in an hour,” I whispered, my mind racing through a dozen survival scenarios as I stared at the zip-ties spilling out of the duffel bag. “They think they’re just playing a prank on me. They’re going to open the hatch to let me out.”

The caretaker let out a low, gravelly laugh that sent shivers down my spine. “Let them try. The moment they open that lid to check their handiwork, the automated security latch drops. Once the second generation is inside, the vault seals permanently from the outside. No keys. No way out. Just like it happened to the class of ’87.”

He took a menacing step toward me, reaching into his jacket. “And as for you, little bird—you weren't supposed to see the locker. You were just supposed to be the bait.”

Adrenaline surged through my veins, overriding every ounce of fear. Years of being underestimated, pushed around, and treated as fragile had forged a fierce, unyielding survival instinct inside me. As the caretaker lunged forward to grab my jacket, I didn't run backward; I dropped straight to the ground, sliding hard across the damp dirt between his legs.

He cursed, stumbling forward as his heavy boots lost traction on the gravel.

I scrambled to my feet, sprinting down the narrow corridor faster than I had ever moved in my life. Behind me, I heard his boots pounding heavily against the concrete floor, accompanied by an angry roar.

*I need to get to that ladder,* I thought, my chest burning for oxygen. It’s my only way out.

I burst back into the main chamber just as the caretaker rounded the corner behind me, closing the distance terrifyingly fast. I leaped upward, grabbing the bottom rung of the steel ladder. My achondroplasia made reaching the rungs a desperate vertical struggle, but pure terror fueled my strength. I hauled myself upward, hand over hand, kicking out blindly behind me.

My heel connected solidly with the caretaker’s jaw as he reached up to grab my ankle. He staggered backward with a grunt, losing his footing on the slick metal rungs.

I didn't look back. I scrambled up the final few feet, thrust my head and shoulders through the hatch into the cool night air, and hauled myself out onto the mossy ground just as the campus clock tower in the distance struck the hour.

Footsteps crunched heavily on the brush nearby.

“Well, look who decided to crawl back up,” Chloe’s voice rang out mockingly from the edge of the clearing as she, Brad, Jenna, and Mark stepped out of the shadows, flashing their phone lights toward the bunker. “Did you get the footage, Maya? Or were you too scared of the dark?”

May you like

They were laughing, walking right toward the open hatch, completely oblivious to the nightmare waiting just feet below them.
