Chapter 3 - The Basement Conspiracy**

The photographs felt like blocks of ice in my hands. My mind raced, desperately trying to connect the impossible dots. Those four photos were brand new. High-gloss finish, modern digital print quality. They couldn't have been sitting in a sealed Cold War locker since 1987. That meant someone—someone with access to modern printing equipment and a deeply warped sense of ritual—had put them there recently.

Worse yet, the phrase Replacement Crew echoed with a terrifying implication. The six students who vanished in 1987 hadn't just disappeared into thin air. Had they been brought down here under the exact same cruel pretense? Were Chloe, Brad, Jenna, and Mark not the masterminds of this sick game, but merely the next pieces in a much larger, decades-old puzzle?

Suddenly, a sharp metallic scrape echoed from the top of the bunker.

My head snapped upward toward the hatch. The heavy padlock clinked against the steel frame, and the iron bolt slid open with a loud groan.

*They’re back early,* I thought, a surge of desperate relief washing away my fear. Maybe they realized they went too far. Maybe Chloe felt a shred of guilt and decided to pull me out.

I scrambled back down the corridor toward the drop ladder, my boots slipping on the dirt. “Chloe! Brad!” I shouted, shining my phone beam upward toward the opening square of pale moonlight. “Let me out! I found it, I found the locker, just pull me up!”

The heavy steel door swung wide open, framing a dark silhouette against the night sky. But as the figure stepped up to the edge of the hatch, my voice died in my throat.

It wasn't Chloe or Brad looking down at me.

A pair of heavy work boots dropped over the edge, followed by the unmistakable thud of someone descending the rusted ladder with practiced, heavy steps. The man was dressed in a dark, utilitarian utility jacket, his face shadowed beneath a canvas cap. In his hand, he carried a heavy canvas duffel bag that clinked ominously with every movement.

I pressed myself flat against the cold concrete wall of the corridor, holding my breath, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

The man reached the bottom of the ladder, clicked on a high-powered tactical flashlight, and swept the beam across the room. The harsh white light caught me instantly, freezing me in place like a deer in headlights.

“Well, well, well,” a raspy, deep voice murmured from behind the light. “Looks like the welcoming committee delivered right on schedule.”

“Who are you?” I stammered, my voice cracking as I shrank back into the shadows. “Where are Chloe and the others?”

The man stepped closer, and the light shifted upward, revealing a weathered face crisscrossed with old scars and eyes as cold and dead as winter ice. He gave a dry, humorless chuckle.

“Chloe and her little pack of loyal hounds think they’re the predators,” the man said, tossing the heavy duffel bag onto the dirt floor with a metallic thud. He unzipped it, revealing a collection of industrial zip-ties, heavy chains, and duct tape. “They think bringing down fresh sacrifices every decade earns them immunity from the university’s founding pact. But every thirty-nine years, the cycle demands a new crew to take the place of the old. The 1987 batch failed their watch. Now, it’s your so-called friends’ turn to take their permanent place down here.”

My breath caught. The horrifying truth crashed down on me with the force of a tidal wave. Chloe, Brad, Jenna, and Mark hadn't just invented this sick initiation for me—they were active participants in a generational cult, feeding victims to this underground prison to save their own skins. And tonight, the caretaker was locking them in to complete the harvest.
