Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Holding Facility**

The visiting room of the county detention center was stark, cold, and smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale coffee. I sat on one side of the thick, reinforced Plexiglass partition, dressed in a comfortable wool sweater that hid my bandages, flanked discreetly by Agent Sterling.
Heavy footfalls echoed down the linoleum hallway.
Two guards pushed the side door open, guiding Luke toward the opposite booth. He was wearing a standard-issue orange jumpsuit. His hair was unstyled, his designer stubble overgrown, and the arrogant, polished veneer of the successful corporate partner had completely cracked away, leaving behind a desperate, cornered animal.
When Luke sat down and looked through the glass, catching sight of me sitting upright, healthy, composed, and flanked by federal protection, his eyes bulged. He snatched up the heavy plastic telephone receiver. I slowly picked up mine, pressing it against my ear.
“Caroline!” Luke barked frantically through the speaker, his voice laced with manic desperation. “Carrie, you have to help me! These people—they’re insane! They’re accusing me of things I didn't do! Tell the guards to let me out of here! We’re a family!”
I didn't smile. I didn't cry. I simply stared at him through the glass, letting the heavy, suffocating silence stretch between us.
“There is no family, Luke,” I said quietly, my voice transmitting clearly through the secure intercom. “And there is no accident. The doctors told me everything. The poison in my vitamins. The pots of boiling water. The babies you made sure I lost so you could keep me broken.”
Luke’s face drained of color. He slammed his palm against the Plexiglass partition. “She’s lying! The doctors are lying! You’re unstable, Caroline, you’ve always been crazy! Without me, you’re nothing! You have no money! You have nowhere to go!”
I raised one hand, slowly sliding a certified legal document up against the glass so he could read the bold header.
*Notice of Absolute Asset Seizure and Civil Bankruptcy Receivership.*
*Plaintiff: Caroline Sterling-Hayes.*
*Defendant: Luke Hayes.*
Luke stopped breathing. His eyes darted across the text, recognizing the seal of the trust, the signatures of the federal judges, and the itemized list of every single bank account, stock portfolio, and property deed he had ever boasted about.
“What... what is this?” he whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. “How... how did you pay for this lawyers? Where did you get the money?”
“It was always my money, Luke,” I answered, my voice as cold as winter steel. “Just like the apartment, the company, and the life you thought you owned. You didn't build an empire. You squatted in mine.”
Luke let out a feral, guttural cry of rage, standing up and screaming obscenities as he slammed his fists against the glass. The guards immediately swarmed the booth, grabbing his shoulders and wrestling him backward toward the heavy steel doors.
“I’ll destroy you, Caroline! Do you hear me?! You’ll never be free of me!” he shrieked as they dragged him out of the room, his voice echoing down the concrete hall until the heavy door slammed shut, cutting him off from my world forever.

I hung up the phone receiver, took a slow, deep breath, and felt the last remaining shadow of fear lift entirely off my shoulders.
