Chapter 2 - The Secret Archive and the Genetic Truth**

By midnight, the trauma unit had stabilized my burns, wrapping my torso in specialized medical dressings while a steady drip of pain medication dulled the worst of the agony. The atmosphere in my VIP recovery room felt less like a hospital and more like a tactical command center.
Maya had arrived within forty minutes of our phone call, escorted by federal agents and accompanied by our family attorney, a formidable woman named Clara Vance. When Maya pushed open the door and saw me lying pale and bandaged against the pillows, she didn't say a word. She simply rushed to the bed, gently wrapping her arms around me without touching my injured chest, and wept with a fierce, protective relief.
“I’m so sorry it took me this long to break through his walls, Carrie,” Maya whispered fiercely against my hair. “He changed your number, he blocked your emails, and every time I came to your apartment, he called the police and claimed you were having a mental health crisis.”
“I thought you didn't want to talk to me,” I cried softly. “He told me you said I was dead to you.”
“Never,” Maya vowed, pulling back to look me straight in the eye. She reached into her leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, leather-bound portfolio stamped with official medical seals. “Luke lied about everything. Including why your babies died.”
Agent Thomas Sterling stepped forward, opening the portfolio to reveal a series of clinical charts, genetic sequencing reports, and legal affidavits.
“Mrs. Hayes, when Dr. Evelyn Vance reviewed your medical files tonight, she uncovered something terrifying,” Agent Sterling explained calmly. “For years, Luke told you that your body was weak, that your stress caused your miscarriages, and that you were incapable of giving him a son.”
“Yes,” I whispered, touching my bandaged chest. “He said my womb was defective.”
“It wasn't defective at all,” Maya chimed in, her voice trembling with barely contained rage. “Luke lied to the doctors during every single emergency room visit. He intercepted your lab results. He paid off an attending OB-GYN three years ago to alter your medical records.”
Clara Vance, the attorney, slid a specific lab report across the tray table. “Every single fetus you carried was not only a healthy male—exactly what he claimed to desire—but genetically, chemically, and biologically, they were completely normal. The miscarriages weren't natural, Caroline. They were chemically induced.”
The room spun around me. My breath hitched in my throat. “Induced? By what?”
“By heavy doses of synthetic endocrine disruptors and abortifacient compounds,” Agent Sterling stated grimly. “Administered directly into your prenatal vitamins, your morning tea, and the meals Luke meticulously prepared for you every single day.”
A cold wave of horror washed over me. Luke hadn't just poured boiling water on me when he snapped; he had been poisoning me from the inside out for years. Whenever I got pregnant, he would panic. He didn't want a son—not really. He wanted an excuse to torture me, to keep me trapped in a state of perpetual psychological servitude, constantly blaming myself for failing him while he played the saintly, suffering husband.
“Why?” I whispered, tears blinding my eyes. “Why would he do that if he claimed he wanted a family?”

Maya reached out, squeezing my hand tightly. “Because a broken woman with no family, no money, and no self-esteem will never leave him. You were his prisoner, Carrie. And he built your cage out of your own grief.”
