Chapter 3 - The Corporate Guillotine**

Three days after the hospital admission, sitting in a secure recovery lounge with Maya and attorney Clara Vance, we prepared to deliver the first phase of our counterattack. Luke was currently sitting in a county holding cell, denied bail due to the severity of the domestic assault charges and the newly uncovered federal investigation into medical tampering and assault.
Clara adjusted her glasses, sliding a master financial audit across the coffee table.
“Now that the criminal charges are locked in, Caroline, we need to dismantle his financial life,” Clara stated professionally. “Luke believes he controls everything. He told the arresting officers that you had no money, no property rights, and no way to survive without him.”
I looked down at the documents. They were the corporate ledgers of Sterling & Thorne, where Luke was a senior partner.
“He controls my bank accounts,” I reminded her quietly. “He wouldn't even let me have a debit card in my own name.”
“He thought he controlled your bank accounts,” Maya corrected with a sharp, triumphant smile. She tapped the folder. “Carrie, do you remember the small inheritance left to us by our grandmother ten years ago? The one Luke pressured you to sign over to his startup company?”
“I signed it,” I nodded. “He said we needed it for our first house.”
“You signed a preliminary draft,” Clara corrected smoothly. “Our grandmother’s trust attorney anticipated men like Luke. The actual trust assets—amounting to over twelve million dollars in venture capital investments and real estate equity—were shielded in an irrevocable dynasty trust registered solely under your maiden name, Caroline Sterling.”
My jaw dropped. “Twelve million?”
“And growing,” Clara nodded. “Furthermore, because Luke utilized marital funds to commit ongoing domestic torture and falsified financial documents to drain your personal savings, our legal team has filed an emergency civil asset forfeiture injunction. As of this morning, Luke’s corporate partnership has been terminated for gross moral turpitude, his personal bank accounts have been frozen, his luxury sports car has been repossessed, and the penthouse apartment is currently under foreclosure receivership by your trust.”
The sheer magnitude of the reversal washed over me. Luke had spent years treating me like a stray dog, starving me of independence, locking me in our home, and convincing me I was nothing. In less than seventy-two hours, my family and our legal team had stripped away his wealth, his career, his status, and his freedom.
“I want to see him,” I said suddenly, the words leaving my lips before I even fully realized I was saying them.
Maya looked startled. “Carrie, are you sure? You don't ever have to look at his face again.”
May you like
“I do,” I replied, my voice steadying with a cold, hard strength I didn't know I possessed. “I need to look him in the eye while he realizes that the woman he tried to destroy is the one who legally owns everything he ever worshipped.”
