Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid and the Traitor’s Confession

The clock on the wall of the basement security hub read 2:14 AM.
The Sterling estate was shrouded in heavy fog, the silence of the night broken only by the hum of cooling fans on banks of high-definition surveillance monitors.
Domenico stood in the center of the room, dressed in tactical black combat gear, a suppressed semi-automatic pistol holstered securely at his hip. Behind him stood six of his most elite, fiercely loyal enforcers—men who had bled with him in the trenches of the New York underworld long before wealth and mansions had softened the family name.
“All systems secure,” reported Marcus, the head of technical surveillance, tapping rapidly at his keyboard. “The east wing security grid has been manually bypassed from inside the master suite. Miriam just let two of Conrad’s personal hitmen into the house through the side terrace doors.”
Domenico’s face remained carved from absolute stone. “Let them move. Don't interfere until they reach the primary hallway outside Eli’s bedroom.”
“Boss, are you sure?” Marcus asked cautiously. “If they get too close to the boy—”
“They won't,” Domenico interrupted, his voice dropping into a lethal register. “I want them walking right into the trap. I want the proof undeniable, and I want every single rat trapped in the maze.”
Upstairs on the second floor, shadows crept silently down the plush carpeting of the residential wing.
Two masked figures in dark tactical gear moved with practiced, predatory stealth, holding silenced firearms as they crept toward the double doors of Eli’s children's suite. Leading them was Miriam herself, wearing a velvet dressing gown, her face illuminated by the pale moonlight streaming through the tall corridor windows.
“The boy is inside the second door on the left,” Miriam whispered quietly to the lead hitman, her voice devoid of a single ounce of maternal remorse. “Make it look like a tragic accident during a break-in. Once Domenico realizes he has nothing left to protect, he’ll sign over the port concessions to Conrad by morning.”
The lead hitman nodded, raising his suppressed pistol and gently turning the brass handle of Eli’s bedroom door.
*Click.*
The door swung open silently. The hitman stepped inside into the darkened room, aiming his weapon toward the small bed tucked neatly against the far wall.
He fired twice.
*PFFT! PFFT!*
The bullets tore straight through a massive pile of pillows hastily arranged beneath the heavy blankets.
There was no blood. No child. Just fluffy white feathers exploding into the air.
The hitman froze, a sudden cold realization washing over him. “It’s a trap!”
*CLACK.*
Every light in the entire residential wing blared to life in a blinding flash.
“Looking for someone?”
The cold, deadly whisper came from directly behind them in the doorway.
Miriam and the two hitmen spun around in absolute panic. Standing blocking the exit, flanked by six armed enforcers with laser sights locked squarely on their chests, was Domenico.
He wasn't holding a pistol. He was holding a heavy, encrypted audio recorder, playing back Miriam’s exact words from the hallway just two minutes ago, amplified through a portable speaker for every guard in the estate to hear.
Miriam’s face drained of all color, her hands flying to her mouth as she stumbled backward against the wall. “Domenico… please, I can explain! Conrad forced me—!”
“You sold your soul for a bigger cut, and you tried to trade my son’s life to buy it,” Domenico said, walking slowly toward her, his eyes burning with an unholy fury. “You wanted a ruthless underworld, Miriam? Welcome to it.”
He gestured to his enforcers. “Take the hitmen to the lower holding cells. And lock Miriam in the estate vault until the federal prosecutors arrive in the morning with the racketeering indictments.”
As Miriam screamed and thrashed, being dragged away by the guards down the long hallway, Domenico turned and walked swiftly into Eli’s actual bedroom.

His son was sleeping soundly in a safe room hidden behind the bookshelf, completely unaware of the war raging outside. Domenico knelt beside the small bed, brushing a lock of soft hair from Eli’s forehead, whispering a silent vow that no monster would ever touch his family again.
