Chapter 1 - The Strike in the Garden

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the meticulously manicured lawns of the Sterling estate, casting long, sharp shadows across the imported Italian marble patio. It was supposed to be a quiet Sunday gathering—a rare truce between two powerful factions of the city’s underworld elite. But inside this world, peace was nothing more than a fragile veneer hiding a nest of vipers.

Seven-year-old Eli Sterling crouched down beside a massive, vibrant flower bed near the edge of the courtyard. His small fingers brushed against the smooth leather of a red-and-white football that had rolled off the patio during a brief game. He just wanted to grab his toy and run back to the safety of the indoor playroom.

He didn't hear the heavy footsteps crunching across the gravel path.

Conrad Vance—a ruthless, high-ranking enforcer known for his vicious temper and absolute lack of empathy—loomed over the boy like a predatory shadow. Conrad’s own son stood nearby, sneering with entitled superiority.

Eli reached out his hand, his fingers grazing the ball.

*CRACK.*

Conrad angrily swung a heavy steel landscaping rod downward with terrifying force, striking the concrete ground directly beside Eli’s leg. The impact sent a violent tremor through the earth, spraying sharp gravel and knocking the terrified boy violently backward onto the coarse grass. Eli let out a piercing, breathless scream of pure terror.

“Next time, stay away from my son’s things, you little rat,” Conrad growled, his face twisted into a cruel, ugly sneer.

Across the courtyard, Domenico Sterling—Eli’s father and the reigning head of the family syndicate—was standing beneath the shaded canopy of the covered patio, deep in quiet conversation with two of his most trusted capos, reviewing security logistics for the upcoming port shipments.

The sound of the steel rod striking concrete cut through the afternoon air like a gunshot.

Domenico’s head snapped toward the flower bed. His dark, piercing eyes locked onto the scene in a fraction of a millisecond. The cold, calculated aura of a crime boss vanished instantly, replaced by a primal, terrifying parental fury.

Before his capos could even blink, Domenico bolted across the flagstone patio. He bypassed Conrad entirely for a split second, dropping to his knees and lifting a trembling, sobbing Eli safely up from the ground into his arms.

“Daddy… Daddy, it hurts… That ball is mine,” Eli whimpered, burying his tear-stained face deep into Domenico’s shoulder, his small body shaking uncontrollably.

Domenico held his son tight, pressing a protective kiss to the boy's temple while glaring daggers up at Conrad. But before Domenico could utter a single word, Miriam—Domenico’s cold, status-obsessed wife and Eli’s stepmother—stepped firmly between Domenico and Conrad, completely ignoring the weeping child in her husband’s arms.

“Put him down, Domenico, you're making a scene over nothing,” Miriam hissed, her voice dripping with ice and irritation. “Conrad was just teaching the boy boundaries. He’s a boy. Fear teaches respect. We can’t have him growing up weak in this family.”

Domenico slowly looked from Miriam’s callous, unfeeling face to Conrad, who was smirking with arrogant amusement, casually tapping the steel rod against his palm.

A heavy, suffocating silence descended upon the courtyard. The capos standing near the patio took an instinctive step backward, recognizing the terrifying calm before the storm.

Conrad, emboldened by Miriam’s defense, reached down to pick up the steel rod again, scoffing under his breath. “Listen to your wife, Sterling. The boy needs to learn his—'”

*WHAM.*

Before Conrad could finish his sentence, Domenico moved with the speed and lethal precision of a striking viper. With a single, brutal front kick, Domenico caught the heavy steel rod dead center, sending it flying across the lawn.

Before Conrad could recover his balance, Domenico handed Eli to a stunned capo with a whisper of, “Take him inside.”

Then, Domenico lunged forward, catching Conrad by the lapels of his designer jacket with both hands, and with a surge of ungodly strength, forcefully shoved him backward.

*CRASH.*

Conrad tumbled headfirst into an empty, wrought-iron lawn chair, smashing it to pieces against the stone paving.

“Touch my son again,” Domenico whispered, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly low that it froze the blood in everyone's veins, “and I won't just break your chair. I’ll bury you in the backyard.”
