Chapter 2 - The House Divided and the Poisoned Vows

The evening air inside the Sterling mansion was thick with unspoken tension, heavy enough to choke a man. The guests had long since fled, terrified by the sudden explosion of violence in the courtyard, leaving the massive, gothic-style foyer echoing with silence.
Domenico sat in his private study on the second floor, the soft amber glow of a single desk lamp illuminating the dark wood panels of the room. He was pouring a glass of aged bourbon when the heavy oak door swung open without a knock.
Miriam marched into the room, her eyes flashing with furious indignation, her silk gown rustling sharply with every step.
“Have you completely lost your mind, Domenico?!” Miriam snapped, slamming her hands down onto the edge of the mahogany desk. “Assaulting Conrad Vance in broad daylight? Do you have any idea what kind of political and financial fallout that brings upon our house? Conrad is our primary shipping partner for the western corridor!”
Domenico didn't look up immediately. He slowly raised the crystal glass to his lips, took a calculated sip, and set it down with a soft clink.
“He tried to break our son’s leg with a steel rod, Miriam,” Domenico said, his voice dangerously quiet, lacking any warmth whatsoever.
“He was disciplining a disobedient child!” Miriam shot back, her voice rising in defensive hysteria. “You coddle that boy too much! He’s soft, just like his biological mother before she died. If Conrad hadn't put him in his place, someone else in this syndicate eventually would have. You're running a criminal empire, Domenico, not a kindergarten!”
Domenico slowly stood up from his leather chair. Standing at six feet two inches, towering over her with broad shoulders and an impenetrable expression, he looked every bit the feared underworld kingpin he was.
“Eli is seven years old,” Domenico whispered, stepping around the desk until he stood inches away from his wife. “And the only thing soft in this house right now is your loyalty to this family. You stood there and defended the man who tried to hurt my child. Why? Because Conrad’s syndicate shares cut a bigger percentage into your private offshore accounts?”
Miriam flinched, her pupils dilating for a brief, revealing second before she quickly masked her panic behind a haughty glare. “Don't be absurd. I am thinking about the survival of the family! You can’t afford to make enemies out of the Vance family right now. The board will vote you out if you let personal emotions jeopardize our cash flow!”
“Let them try,” Domenico replied coldly. “And as for you and me, Miriam? Consider our marriage over as of this exact moment. You stay in the east wing. If you ever come within ten feet of Eli again without my express permission, I won't just divorce you—I’ll strip you of every last penny and throw you to the wolves on the street.”
Miriam stared at him, her face turning pale with absolute rage and disbelief. She realized in that instant that Domenico was no longer her husband; he was an apex predator protecting his cub, and anyone standing in his way was nothing more collateral damage.
She turned on her heel, storming out of the study and slamming the heavy door behind her.
But as the heavy oak clicked shut, Domenico didn't relax. His phone buzzed sharply on the desk. He picked it up and read a decrypted text message from his chief intelligence operative:
*Boss, you were right to strike Conrad today. We intercepted a encrypted comms packet between Miriam and Conrad. They aren't just business partners. They’ve been conspiring with the Russian syndicate behind your back to orchestrate a hostile takeover of the family assets—and they planned to eliminate Eli to ensure clean inheritance rights.*

Domenico’s hand tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned chalk white. The vipers weren't just outside the gates. They were sleeping in his bed. And it was time to clean the house with fire.
