Chapter 6 - The Inside Asset

The digital clock on the cell block wall read 3:15 AM. The facility was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, heavy footsteps of the night shift guard making his hourly rounds down the concrete corridor.
David lay awake on his cot, staring up at the peeling paint of the ceiling. Vance’s words echoed through his mind like a ticking clock. If his defense attorney was compromised, relying on the standard legal process was a death sentence. He needed leverage. He needed the physical backup hard drive that Marcus kept locked inside his private office safe at Vance Technologies—the drive containing the original, unaltered transaction logs proving David’s innocence.
A soft scrape at the door of his cell interrupted his thoughts.
David sat up instantly, sliding silently off the edge of the mattress.
A gloved hand reached through the vertical food slot of his cell door, dropping a small, heavy object onto the cold concrete floor with a dull clink.
David dropped to one knee, picking it up. It was a standard-issue master key fob, wrapped in a piece of blue painter's tape with a handwritten note scrawled in hurried block letters: Use it between 4:00 and 4:15 AM during the shift overlap. Head to the basement records room. Look for File 88-B.
It was Officer Hayes' handwriting.
David’s heart hammered against his ribs. Hayes was risking his career—and potentially his freedom—to give him a fighting chance.
"Steady, kid," Vance whispered from the dark shadows of the next cell, sensing the movement. "Remember what I told you. Once you get down to records, don't trust the computer terminals. Marcus’s people have remote root access. You need the physical paper trail."
At 4:00 AM sharp, the heavy electronic locking mechanism of cell block B gave a faint, muffled click as the automated shift change protocol initiated a ten-second power blink across the facility's auxiliary systems.
David slipped out of his cell, the rubber soles of his prison-issued shoes making no sound against the polished floor. He hugged the deep shadows of the concrete wall, slipping past the empty guard station toward the heavy metal service stairwell leading down into the subterranean levels of the facility.

The air grew damp and cold as he descended into the basement, the hum of giant electrical transformers vibrating through the floorboards.
