Chapter 10 - Beyond the Glass

Three days later.
The front steps of the federal courthouse were bathed in brilliant afternoon sunlight. Flashbulbs erupted like a thunderstorm of white lightning as David walked down the grand marble stairs, flanked by his legal team and Officer Hayes.
Standing at the bottom of the steps, waiting for him with open arms, were Sarah and Lily.
Charges against David had been dropped with extreme prejudice at 9:00 AM that morning, following the emergency submission of File 88-B and the immediate execution of an arrest warrant for Marcus on charges of corporate fraud, extortion, and obstruction of justice.
David didn't wait for the reporters shouting questions from the press gallery. He sprinted down the final three marble steps, dropping to his knees just as Lily came flying into his arms with a joyful shriek.
He lifted her high into the air, spinning her around as real, uninhibited laughter echoed across the plaza. Then he set her down gently and pulled Sarah into his embrace, holding her so tightly it felt as though he were fusing his broken pieces back together.
Sarah rested her head against his chest, her eyes closed, tears of pure relief spilling onto his lapel.
"You're home," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "You're really home."

David looked past them, raising his gaze toward the sky where the clouds had parted entirely, leaving behind an endless expanse of clear blue. There were no glass walls here. No guards, no barriers, no partitions.
The glass had finally separated them no more. And as their arms wrapped around each other in a deeply emotional, unbreakable hug, the silence said everything words never could.
