Chapter 2 - The Unexpected Knock

"Daddy!"

The tiny voice pierced through the tense, sterile atmosphere of the holding facility like a ray of golden sunlight breaking through a concrete bunker.

David’s breath hitched. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief as small, pink-sneakered feet came running through the doorway, followed closely by a woman with warm hazel eyes and a tear-streaked smile.

Sarah. And Lily.

They weren't supposed to be here. Not today. The federal prosecutor had explicitly warned Sarah that visiting hours for pre-trial detainees were strictly regulated and that bringing a child into the facility on a holiday weekend was nearly impossible without special judicial clearance—clearance that David's court-appointed public defender had said was a long shot.

"Sarah? Lily?" David whispered, his voice cracking as he surged forward toward the glass, forgetting the guard's command for a split second.

"Step back, inmate," the guard repeated, though this time, there was a strange, uncharacteristic softening in his tone. In fact, as the guard stepped fully into the room, David noticed something astonishing: the stern, granite-faced correctional officer was carrying a large, white cardboard bakery box tied with a bright red ribbon.

Behind the guard walked two more officers—Captain Miller, the notoriously strict shift commander, and Officer Hayes, a rookie who usually looked terrified of his own shadow. But neither of them looked hostile. In fact, Captain Miller had a broad, genuine grin plastered across his weathered face.

"Happy birthday, Cross," Captain Miller said, setting the bakery box down gently on the visitor's side of the Formica counter.

Sarah caught up to Lily, scooping the little girl into her arms and rushing over to the glass partition. Lily pressed her tiny palms flat against the cold surface, her blue eyes shining with excitement.

"We brought cake, Daddy!" Lily squealed, pointing a chubby finger at the box. "Mommy said we couldn't eat it without you, so we waited!"

David felt a hot tear spill over his lower eyelid, tracking down his cheek. He pressed his own hand against the glass, aligning his palm directly behind Lily's small handprint. The freezing temperature of the barrier was instantly forgotten, replaced by the overwhelming, suffocating wave of a love so fierce it made his chest ache.
