Chapter 9 - A New Dawn on the Bridge

Six months after her miraculous recovery, Lillian insisted on one specific stop before they packed up the last of their belongings to move into their permanent home in the suburbs.

The black luxury sedan pulled off the highway and parked on the gravel shoulder near the South End overpass.

Yale turned off the ignition, looking over at Lillian with concern. "Are you sure you want to do this, Lilli? We don't need to look back."

"I do, Yale," Lillian smiled softly, opening her door. "I need to remember where we came from, so I never take for granted where we are going."

Hand in hand, Yale and Lillian walked down the grassy embankment beneath the concrete pillars. The city had already cleared out the old debris, power-washing the brickwork where the makeshift tent had once stood.

Annie ran ahead, chasing a butterfly across the autumn grass, her laughter echoing brightly against the stone.

Lillian stopped at the exact spot where she had spent freezing nights shivering under woolen blankets, wondering if she would live to see the sunrise. She felt Yale’s warm arm wrap around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"Remember when you told me under this bridge that you thought I was a ghost?" Lillian murmured, leaning her head on his shoulder.

"I was the ghost back then," Yale replied, kissing the top of her head. "You were the one who was truly alive. You carried our light through the darkest tunnel imaginable."

Lillian turned in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. She looked up into his eyes, seeing no trace of the grief-stricken, bitter man who had fled to Zurich five years ago. There was only peace, devotion, and an unshakeable future.

"Thank you for finding me, Yale," she whispered.

"I would have searched the ends of the earth," Yale answered, and kissed her—a deep, healing kiss that washed away the last of the bitter past.
