Chapter 6 - The Miracle Compound

Ten minutes later, Marcus returned, carrying a small, insulated metal lockbox. Inside rested a single glass vial filled with a shimmering, bioluminescent blue serum—*Remora-X*.

Yale took the vial from Marcus’s hands. His fingers were remarkably steady as he drew the glowing fluid into a precision syringe. He stepped up to Lillian’s bedside, gently lifting her limp, bruised wrist to access the central venous catheter.

"Come back to me, Lilli," Yale whispered, pressing his forehead briefly against her cold hand. "You fought for our daughter. Now let me fight for you."

He depressed the plunger, injecting the engineered viral vector directly into her bloodstream.

For thirty excruciating seconds, nothing happened. The monitors continued their erratic, desperate beep. Outside the glass, Annie pressed her small hands against the window, watching her father like a guardian angel standing over an altar.

Then, the alarms began to shriek.

*“Warning: Ventricular tachycardia detected! Blood pressure dropping—70 over 40!”*

"Crash cart! Charge to two hundred joules!" Marcus yelled, bursting back into the room with emergency nurses trailing behind him.

"No! Wait!" Yale ordered, throwing himself over the bedrail, keeping his eyes glued to the real-time cellular assay monitor connected to Lillian’s arterial line. "Look at the cytokine response curve! It's not rejection—it's targeted apoptosis!"

On the monitor, a radical transformation was occurring at the microscopic level. The engineered T-cells in Remora-X were swarming the malignant blast cells, shredding their cellular membranes in a localized immune storm.

Suddenly, the frantic beeping of the heart monitor smoothed out. The blood pressure climbed steadily back to 110 over 70. The fever spike broke, coating Lillian’s forehead in a sheen of healthy perspiration.

The room fell into an awed, breathless silence.

Marcus checked the digital readout, his jaw dropping in sheer disbelief. "Her blast cell count... it's dropping vertically. Fifty percent reduction... twenty percent... zero."

Yale let out a ragged, shuddering breath, sliding down against the side of the hospital bed as exhaustion finally overtook his adrenaline. He buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking as he wept silent tears of relief.

The miracle drug worked. Lillian was going to live.
