Chapter 4 - Blood, Silk, and Sabotage

The fallout from the press conference was instantaneous. Within two hours, #PhoenixLine was trending number one globally. The orders for Vance Luxury plummeted forty percent overnight as buyers scrambled to find out how to secure an invitation to my private showing.

Inside my SoHo loft, the air was thick with the scent of ozone and crushed roses.

I sat at the heavy oak workbench, a silver needle clamped between my fingers. To create enough thread for an entire twenty-piece collection, I couldn't rely on random emotions. The Tear of Phoenix required genuine, deep-seated passion—the kind forged from betrayal, memory, and love.

I closed my eyes, allowing the painful memories of my past to flood my mind: my father turning a blind eye when Chloe threw my mother’s antique sketchbooks into the fireplace; the cold nights spent sleeping on the floor of the fashion school cutting room; the moment Chloe stole my first major design portfolio and passed it off as her own.

A heavy, diamond-bright tear welled in my eye and fell directly onto a spool of raw copper wire resting on the table.

*Crack-flash.*

A blinding burst of white light illuminated the dark loft. The copper wire dissolved into a sprawling web of metallic silk that expanded across the room, weaving itself around dress forms, forming gowns, capes, and tailored suits of impossible complexity.

Suddenly, the heavy iron security door of the loft groaned under a violent impact.

*BANG.*

Julian drew his weapon instantly, moving to cover me. "Lyra, stay behind me!"

The door was kicked off its hinges, crashing onto the concrete floor. Four men in dark tactical gear stepped into the loft, wielding sledgehammers and cans of industrial solvent.

Leading them was Carter Vance—Chloe’s ruthless brother and the head of security for the Vance conglomerate.

"Break everything," Carter sneered, raising a sledgehammer. "Burn the cloth. Leave her with nothing."
