Chapter 1 - The Smoldering Ruins of Velvet & Vine

The stench of scorched silk and melted mannequin plastic still hung heavy over 5th Avenue when the sun broke over the Manhattan skyline.

I stood behind the yellow police tape, my vintage trench coat wrapped tightly against the biting autumn wind. Velvet & Vine—my life’s work, the three-story flagship boutique I had built thread by thread after escaping my family’s abusive shadow—was reduced to a hollowed-out concrete shell. Black soot streaked the marble facade, and jagged shards of tempered glass glittered across the pavement like scattered ice.

Standing on the opposite side of the avenue, leaning elegantly against the hood of a cherry-red Maybach, was my stepsister, Chloe Vance. She wore a pristine white wool coat, sipping an iced lavender latte, her crimson lips curved into a cruel, triumphant smile.

She thought she had won. She thought that by dousing my archival collection in kerosene and tossing a silver Zippo onto my signature hand-embroidered wedding gowns, she had erased me from the high-fashion hierarchy.

A single tear escaped my eye. It didn't roll down my cheek out of weakness, grief, or defeat. It fell because of the ancient, forgotten gift passed down through the matriarchs of my mother’s bloodline—a secret I had kept hidden my entire life.

The tear trickled down my cheek and hit the charred velvet ribbon lying at my feet.

The moment the salty drop touched the blackened fabric, a faint, iridescent ripple shivered through the air. The scorched silk beneath my leather boot didn't just stop smoking; it vibrated. A microscopic wave of golden thread began to spin out of thin air, weaving itself back through the ashes, restoring the burnt fibers with a diamond-like luster that no loom on earth could replicate.

I lifted my head, wiped my cheek dry with a gloved finger, and met Chloe’s gaze across the street.

Her smile faltered slightly as I turned my back on the ashes and walked straight toward the waiting black town car driven by my head of security, Julian.

"Miss Vance," Julian said, opening the door for me, his jaw tight with anger as he glanced at the ruined building. "The arson investigator says the security footage was wiped from the cloud. They’re ruling it an electrical fire."

"Let them rule it whatever they want, Julian," I said, stepping into the leather interior. "Chloe thinks she burned my boutique to the ground. She doesn't realize she just ignited the match that’s going to burn down her entire empire."
