Chapter 2 - The Mask Drops

On the central monitor, Sabina emerged from the east wing hallway, her posture shifting instantaneously. The warm, demure smile she had flashed Chadworth at the breakfast table vanished, replaced by an expression of sharp, predatory irritation. Her shoulders squared, her chin lifted, and her eyes hardened into slate. She walked with a swift, purposeful stride that commanded the room without uttering a single syllable.

Lorelai froze mid-stroke, her colored pencil hovering over the paper. Gemma immediately pulled her knees up to her chest, clutching the plush rabbit so tightly her small knuckles turned white.

"I thought I told you both to clear out of the sunroom before I came back down," Sabina’s voice, amplified by the concealed boundary microphones, cut through the quiet of the monitoring vault like shattered glass.

In the dark room, Chadworth stiffened. The tone was not that of an affectionate stepmother attempting to establish household order; it was the chilling, calculated register of an overseer addressing insubordinate labor.

"We were just finishing our drawing, Miss Sabina," Lorelai said, her voice small, trembling slightly as she instinctively placed her body between Sabina and her younger sister.

"Don't talk back to me, you ungrateful little brat," Sabina hissed, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. She didn't strike the child, but the psychological violence of her movement was palpable. She snatched the sketchpad from Lorelai’s hands and tossed it violently across the hardwood floor, sending loose pencils scattering in all directions. "Your father is gone. There is no one here to coddle you. When I give an instruction, you obey it instantly, or you will find out very quickly how uncomfortable life in this house can become."

Gemma let out a muffled sob, burying her face against Lorelai’s shoulder. Lorelai wrapped her arms around her sibling, her face pale, her eyes fixed not with anger, but with a paralyzing, systemic terror that only came from prolonged, systematic abuse.

Chadworth’s breath hitched. His chest seized as if struck by a physical blow. This was not a isolated outburst of frustration; this was a well-established dynamic—a reign of terror executed precisely within the blind spots of his busy schedule, hidden beneath the facade of domestic harmony.

Before Sabina could step closer to the trembling children, the kitchen door swung open silently. Rosamund entered carrying a tray of fresh linens, her steps unhurried, her eyes lowered with professional deference. Yet, the positioning of her body was a masterclass in tactical intervention. Without uttering a challenge, she stepped directly into the line of sight between Sabina and the girls, her shoulder brushing the edge of the antique side table to create a physical barrier.

"Pardon me, Miss Sabina," Rosamund said, her voice remarkably steady, devoid of any subservience. "Mr. Prescott requested that these linens be pressed and placed in the master suite before noon. If you require assistance with the inventory, I am at your disposal."

Sabina spun around, her face contorting with rage. "Stay out of this, you miserable nobody. You think because Chadworth keeps you around to wipe noses that you have a voice in this household?"

"I only serve the household, ma'am," Rosamund replied quietly, never breaking eye contact, her calm demeanor acting like a lightning rod for Sabina’s fury.
