Chapter 4 - The Confession in the Dark**

The medical room was blessedly quiet, insulated from the violent storm raging just beyond its glass walls. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound keeping time in the dim, amber-lit space.

I pulled a steel chair close to Tessa’s bedside, sat down, and gently took her cold, bruised hand in mine. Her fingers were limp, her skin pale. I pressed her knuckles against my lips, closing my eyes as the heavy, jagged pain of losing our child threatened to tear me apart from the inside out.

I had spent years protecting nations, hunting high-value targets across hostile borders, and securing the safety of millions of strangers—yet when it mattered most, when my own wife and unborn child needed me within arm's reach, I had been thousands of miles away, trusting that family would mean safety.

A soft knock tapped against the door frame.

I didn't turn around. “Enter.”

The Master Sergeant stepped quietly into the room, closing the door softly behind him. He held a thick, encrypted tactical tablet in his hands.

“Commander,” the Sergeant reported in a low, respectful murmur. “The local precinct has been purged of all Vance family corruption. The desk sergeants who took bribes to ignore domestic violence reports against this household have been arrested by internal affairs. Furthermore... we extracted a full digital and verbal confession from Marcus.”

My eyes snapped open. I turned my head slowly to look at the Sergeant.

“A confession?”

“Yes, Sir,” the Sergeant nodded, tapping the screen of the tablet and placing it gently on the edge of the medical tray table. “When we locked him in the transport van and informed him that his federal charges carried a mandatory minimum of forty years without parole—and that his precious timber empire was being auctioned off by the Department of the Treasury—he broke completely.”

The Sergeant tapped a play button on the encrypted audio file.

Marcus’s voice—shaking, terrified, and pathetic—spilled out from the tablet's tiny speaker.

*“We didn't mean to kill the baby! We swear! We just wanted to scare her! She was packing her bags, she told us she was filing for divorce and taking our grandson away to live with him on the military base! Dad... Dad got furious. He said no Vance blood was ever going to be raised by a soldier. He shoved her against the kitchen counter... and then... and then we all just lost control... but it was an accident! Please don't take our land! Please!”*

The audio stopped.

The room fell back into a heavy, suffocating silence.

Every muscle in my body tightened. The desire for vengeance—cold, bloody, and absolute—surged through my veins like liquid fire. They hadn't just attacked my wife in a fit of rage; it had been a premeditated, coordinated assault born of pure, arrogant malice, driven by the belief that they were above the law and that I was too weak to stop them.

“What are your orders regarding Donald Vance, Sir?” the Sergeant asked quietly, watching my face with unwavering discipline. “The local prosecutor is too terrified of their family name to touch them, but under federal emergency jurisdiction, we can transfer them to a black-site military detention facility in upstate New York before midnight. No bail. No trials by local juries.”

I stared down at Tessa’s pale, bruised face. I thought about the little nursery with the mint-green walls sitting empty back at our home. I thought about the son I would never get to teach how to fish, how to throw a baseball, or how to stand up against bullies like his grandfather.

“Transfer them,” I whispered, my voice dripping with ice. “Every single one of them. And make sure Donald Vance spends the rest of his natural life staring at four concrete walls, knowing that his greed, his arrogance, and his hatred destroyed everything bearing his bloodline.”

“Consider it done, Commander.”

The Sergeant saluted crisply, turned on his heel, and slipped silently out of the room, leaving me alone once again with the woman who meant more to me than my own life.
