Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Ledger**

The silence in the master suite was so absolute that I could hear the faint hum of the HVAC system and the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the cliff far below.
Vincent didn't move. He stood frozen near the edge of the mahogany desk, his dark eyes locked onto my hand, which was still pressed flat against my stomach.
“Explain,” he whispered. The single word carried more terror than a loaded gun pointing at my head.
“I... I didn't know,” I stammered, my voice trembling as hot tears prickled behind my eyelids. I was terrified of what this meant. In Vincent’s world, unexpected variables were eliminated. A pregnant wife carrying a child that wasn't supposed to exist—a child with unknown paternity, or a child that threatened the fragile balance of power within his syndicate—was a catastrophic liability. “Vincent, I swear to God, I didn't plan this. I didn't even know until this second.”
Vincent’s chest rose and fell in slow, heavy surges. He dragged a hand through his dark hair, walking toward the window and staring out into the blackness of the bay.
“Ten years ago,” Vincent said, his voice flat, stripped of all emotion, “after the hit on my convoy in Newark, the doctors at St. Jude’s gave me a definitive medical verdict. Internal trauma. Severe scarring. Sterility. Permanent and irreversible.”
He turned slowly to look at me, his eyes burning with an intense, incomprehensible fire. “Everyone in New Jersey knew it. My captains knew it. My enemies knew it. My cousin Nolan has spent the last five years positioning himself as my sole heir, whispering to the commission that the Carver bloodline dies with me.”
“Then... then how is this possible?” I whispered, wrapping my arms around myself as if to hold my breaking body together.
Vincent didn't answer immediately. He walked back across the room, stopping inches away from me. His large hand reached out, his fingers gently brushing against my cheek, wiping away a stray tear with a tenderness that completely dismantled my defenses.
“Because,” Vincent murmured, his voice thick with a dark, terrifying realization, “the medical reports were never filed by independent doctors. They were compiled by Dr. Marcus Vance—the personal physician of my late uncle, and the primary medical consultant for my cousin Nolan.”
My breath hitched. “Are you saying...?”
“I’m saying Nolan wanted me weak,” Vincent growled, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. “He wanted the syndicate to believe I was broken. He wanted me isolated, desperate, and without a legitimate lineage, so that when he made his move to usurp my throne, nobody would stand in his way.”
The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Nolan Carver hadn't just manipulated medical records; he had orchestrated the entire ecosystem of vulnerability around the family.
And now, an ordinary, plus-size accountant from Port Sterling had accidentally blown the lid off a ten-year conspiracy that had shaped the entire East Coast underworld.
“If Nolan finds out,” I whispered, my voice shaking uncontrollably, “he’ll kill us. He’ll kill the baby before it’s even born.”
Vincent’s expression hardened into something sub-zero, something ancient and primal. The ruthless mafia boss—the man who had built an empire on blood, grit, and iron discipline—stepped forward and pulled me firmly against his chest, wrapping his arms around me in a crushing, unbreakable embrace.
“Nolan will never touch you,” Vincent vowed, his voice vibrating against my ear like a death sentence. “And he will never touch my child. Starting tonight, the rules of this game change.”

He pulled back, looking down into my eyes with fierce, unyielding devotion. “Claire, listen to me very carefully. From this moment on, you are no longer just my accountant, and you are no longer my arranged bride. You are the beating heart of the Carver dynasty. And we are going to wage war.”
