Chapter 3 - The Web of Deception**

Six weeks passed in a blur of monitors, tiny milestones, and meticulous legal preparation. Lily finally grew strong enough to leave her incubator and move into an open crib, her breathing steady and her dark eyes opening wide to look at the world. Every gram she gained felt like a victory against the men who had tried to throw her away.
While I focused on my daughter, Grant’s life was reaching a fever pitch of ostentatious display. Vivian had spared no expense for the wedding of the year, booking the historic St. Jude Cathedral downtown and the glass-enclosed botanical conservatory for the reception. Invitations flooded elite mailboxes across New York and Chicago, featuring heavy cream cardstock embossed in gold leaf: Grant Vance and Celeste Ashford request the honor of your presence at the celebration of their union and the upcoming arrival of the Vance family heir.
Daniel kept me updated on every move. The corporate audit had uncovered that Grant had systematically looted over eight hundred thousand dollars from subsidiary accounts to fund the wedding, the engagement ring, and a down payment on a Hamptons estate under Celeste’s name. Worse still, the illegal transfer documents for the Orlov Dynamics thermal stabilization patent were fully prepared, waiting for Grant’s digital signature at precisely 12:00 PM on Saturday—the exact minute he would be standing at the altar exchanging vows.
Grant believed he was executing the ultimate escape. With the patent sold to Orlov for twenty million dollars under a shell company, and a wealthy new family backing Celeste, he assumed he could thumb his nose at the Mercer family trust, declare personal bankruptcy on his old debts, and vanish into the sunset with his stolen empire.
On Friday evening, the night before the wedding, my phone lit up with a text message from an unknown number. It was a screenshot of a hotel bill and a series of intimate messages between Celeste and a handsome junior executive from Orlov Dynamics named Julian Vance—no relation to Grant, but remarkably close to him in age and appearance. Genetic confirmation, courtesy of a private investigator Daniel had hired, proved that Julian was the biological father of the child Celeste was carrying.
She wasn't carrying a Vance heir at all. She was carrying the child of the very competitor Grant was conspiring with to steal our company’s patents.
I smiled as I saved the file to my tablet. The irony was so exquisite it felt like a work of fiction. Grant was walking straight into a trap crafted by his own greed, arrogance, and infidelity, completely unaware that the ground beneath his feet had already turned to dust.
Saturday morning dawned bright and cloudless. In cities across the country, guests dressed in designer tuxedos and evening gowns made their way toward St. Jude Cathedral. Inside my apartment overlooking the park, I dressed Lily in a soft white cotton dress, kissed her forehead, and handed her over to my mother and brother for safekeeping. Then I slipped into a sharp, tailored crimson suit that commanded the room without saying a word.
