Chapter 4 - The Living Room Tribunal

The crystal chandelier in the grand living room cast a brilliant, unforgiving light over the Persian rug as evening fell. Family members, including Robert and Aunt Claire, sat stiffly on the velvet sofas, murmuring quietly amongst themselves. Olivia stood near the fireplace like a prosecuting attorney, looking immaculate in a designer silk dress, her expression a masterclass in feigned disappointment and righteous authority. Sophie stood near the doorway, her hands clasped tightly in front of her simple apron, trembling slightly as she looked around the room, completely unaware of why she had been summoned to a mandatory family gathering at eight o'clock at night. Michael walked in slowly, carrying a thick manila folder under his arm, and took a seat in the center armchair. “Thank you all for joining,” Michael began, his voice cutting through the quiet room with razor-sharp precision. “We are here tonight to address some very serious allegations regarding security breaches and missing property within this household.” Olivia stepped forward immediately, playing her part to absolute perfection. “Thank you, Michael. It pains me to say this, but after months of giving Sophie second chance after second chance, her negligence has gone too far. Just today, I found classified company files hidden in her belongings, alongside missing family heirlooms.” She turned her gaze to Sophie, her voice hardening. “How do you explain yourself, Sophie? Stealing from the family that gave you a livelihood?” Sophie’s face drained of all color, tears welling in her eyes as she shook her head frantically. “I didn't take anything! I swear to God, ma’am, I have never touched those files! I don't even know what’s inside them!” “Liar!” Olivia gasped dramatically, pressing a hand to her chest. “We all saw how distracted and resentful you’ve been!” Robert frowned, looking toward Michael. “Well, son, the evidence seems clear. We have to call the authorities and press charges. You can’t harbor a thief.” Michael remained completely still. He didn't blink. He opened the manila folder slowly, sliding out several pristine, high-resolution photographs and documents, but he didn't hand them to Olivia. Instead, he signaled toward the double doors of the study. “You’re right, Dad,” Michael said evenly. “We do need to look at the evidence. But not the evidence Olivia prepared.” The heavy doors swung open, and Marcus Vance stepped into the living room, followed by two federal agents in dark suits holding a heavy silver briefcase. Olivia’s triumphant smile instantly froze on her face, turning into a mask of sudden, frantic terror. “What... what is the meaning of this?” Olivia stammered, taking a step backward toward the mantelpiece. “Who are these men?” Michael stood up slowly, his eyes locked entirely on his bride-to-be. “These men are federal investigators, Olivia. And they aren't here for Sophie. They’re here for you.”
