Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By Thursday morning, the tension inside the Buckhead mansion was thick enough to cut with a knife. Wedding preparations were moving at a breakneck speed, with florists, caterers, and lighting technicians trampling through the halls, completely unaware of the subterranean war being waged beneath the polished floors. Olivia was in her element, barking orders at the decorators while flashing brilliant, camera-ready smiles whenever Robert or other family members walked past. Sophie was quietly polishing the silver in the formal dining room, her shoulders slightly hunched, carrying the invisible weight of a mounting storm she didn't even know was directed at her. Michael watched her from the second-floor landing. He had quietly arranged for private security to monitor the estate perimeter, and Marcus’s cybersecurity experts had already mirrored the hard drives of every device in the house without leaving a single trace. But Michael knew he couldn't just spring a federal trap on Olivia without maximum impact. She needed to feel completely invincible right up until the exact moment the rug was pulled out from under her feet. At breakfast, Olivia leaned across the table, touching Michael’s arm with manicured fingernails. “Darling, we really need to talk about letting Sophie go today,” she said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness and deep concern. “She lost three diamond-encrusted napkin rings this morning, and frankly, her behavior has become entirely erratic. I found a stack of confidential corporate files tucked inside her cleaning bucket yesterday. It’s a massive security risk for your firm.” Michael slowly lowered his coffee cup, his eyes locking onto hers with a terrifying calm. “Confidential corporate files?” “Yes! I didn't want to worry you, but she’s clearly up to something illicit. We should terminate her immediately before the wedding next week. For safety.” Robert nodded in agreement from the head of the table. “She’s right, Michael. You can’t have untrustworthy people inside the house with all your business data floating around. Let Olivia handle the dismissal. She has a list of grievances ready.” Michael held Olivia’s gaze for three agonizingly long seconds, watching the predatory triumph flicker just behind her pupils. She thought she had won checkmate. She thought her trap had sprung perfectly. “No,” Michael said smoothly. “Let’s not handle it in private. Let’s have a formal family meeting tonight after dinner. We’ll address all of Sophie’s alleged infractions right here in the living room, with everyone present to witness it.” Olivia’s smile flashed instantly—a brilliant, victorious beam. “Oh, sweetie, if you insist. But don't be too lenient on her. People like that need to learn accountability.”
