Chapter 5 - Karma’s Final Verdict**

The entire ballroom went dead silent as my mother's frantic voice spilled out of my smartphone speaker for all two hundred guests to hear.
"Maya! Maya, pick up the phone! Oh God, please tell me you're answering!"
My mother was sobbing. Not dainty, polite tears—full-blown, hysterical panic.
I leaned down toward the phone, my voice completely level, devoid of any emotion. "I'm here, Mom. I'm right in the middle of my wedding reception. What could possibly be so important?"
"It’s your father!" she shrieked, the background noise of sirens wailing loudly through her end of the line. "The police are here! Federal agents! They just raided the house and hauled your father away in handcuffs! They froze our bank accounts, Maya! They locked our credit cards! The house is being seized! We have nowhere to go! Please, you have money—you and Julian have to help us! You're my daughter!"
A cold, sweet wave of vindication washed over me.
"My wedding reception is lovely, Mom," I replied smoothly, glancing around the room at our stunned, supportive guests. "The food is incredible, the wine is flowing, and my husband just gave the most wonderful speech."
"Maya, listen to me! Your father made a mistake! It was for Chloe! We did it for family!" she wailed, her voice cracking with absolute desperation.
"Funny," I said softly, letting the silence stretch for a agonizing three seconds. "You told me earlier today that a real family learns how to make sacrifices for one another."
"Maya—!"
"Enjoy your flight home from Bali, Mom," I said. "Tell Chloe her influencer career is going to look real interesting from a jail cell."
I tapped the red end-call button.
The phone went dark.
For a second, the ballroom remained frozen in stunned silence. Then, slowly, Sarah lifted her glass of champagne.
"To Maya and Julian," Sarah announced, her voice ringing clear and triumphant across the room. "To resilience, to justice, and to building a real family based on love, not control!"
Two hundred glasses rose into the air in unison.
"To Maya and Julian!" the crowd roared back.
The string quartet immediately launched into an upbeat, joyful jazz melody, and the heavy cloud that had hung over the venue all day vanished into the crisp Napa night. Julian pulled me out onto the dance floor, wrapping his strong arms around my waist as the spotlights washed over us.
"How do you feel?" he whispered into my hair, resting his chin gently on the top of my head.
I looked past his shoulder, glancing once more at the empty chairs in the front row. They didn't look sad anymore. They just looked like old trash waiting to be swept away.

I smiled, pressing my face against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart.
"I feel lighter than air," I whispered. "Let's dance."
