Chapter 4 - The Public Unmasking**

The silence in the ballroom was so dense it felt physical.
Julian cleared his throat, holding the paper steady in the warm candlelight.
"Subject line," Julian read aloud, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "*Your final mistake as a married couple.*"
Across the room, my cousin Greg choked on his wine, coughing into his napkin.
"Robert writes," Julian continued, pacing slowly across the raised wooden floor:
> 'Julian, I am writing this to you as a final appeal to your common sense, since my eldest daughter is clearly too selfish and stubborn to listen. By refusing to postpone your wedding for Chloe’s crucial career opportunity in Bali, you are both demonstrating a profound lack of family loyalty. Patricia and I will not dignify this disrespect with our presence. We will not sit in the front row and watch Maya reward her own arrogance. Furthermore, do not expect a single cent of financial support from us for your down payment on that San Francisco townhouse, nor any future inheritance. You are making your bed. Sleep in it alone. Consider this our final communication until Maya learns how to humble herself before her family.'
Julian stopped pacing. He lowered the paper and looked directly out into the stunned crowd.
"Signed," Julian concluded coldly, "*Robert Sterling, Managing Partner of Sterling & Associates Wealth Management.*"
An explosion of furious murmurs rocked the room. Faces turned bright red with indignation. My uncle Dave slammed his fist onto his table, shouting, "That arrogant son of a bitch!"
My mother’s best friend, a woman named Eleanor who lived down the street from my parents and loved inserting herself into everyone's business, turned sheet-white and slumped back into her chair.
Julian folded the letter deliberately, sliding it back into his pocket.
"Robert and Patricia assumed that by abandoning Maya today, they would break her," Julian said, his voice rising, carrying a fierce, protective pride. "They assumed she was entirely dependent on their approval, their validation, and their financial control. What they didn't know—what none of them bothered to check—is that empires built on emotional manipulation tend to collapse the second the foundation shifts."
Julian turned and looked directly at me, offering a reassuring smile before addressing the room once more.
"Earlier this week, unbeknownst to Robert, a routine financial audit was completed on Sterling & Associates Wealth Management. Turns out, managing partner Robert Sterling has spent the last three years quietly embezzling client trust funds to bankroll his younger daughter's extravagant lifestyle, high-end apartment leases, and yes... multiple luxury trips to Bali."
The gasp that sucked the air out of the room was deafening.
"Federal investigators were notified yesterday morning," Julian concluded calmly. "As we sit here eating prime rib, freezing orders are being processed on all of Robert’s personal and corporate assets. By morning, my father-in-law won't have a townhouse, a bank account, or a law license. But hey... at least Chloe got her Instagram photos in Bali."
A chaotic roar of shock, gasps, and frantic whispering erupted across the tables. My phone, sitting quietly beside my water glass, suddenly began to vibrate frantically against the wood.
I picked it up.
The screen flashed: Mom calling.

I looked at Julian, hit the green button, and placed the phone flat on the table on speaker.
