Chapter 6 - The Sister's Ultimatum

Twenty minutes later, Emma’s sedan pulled into the driveway of Sarah’s suburban home. The porch light was burning brightly, casting a warm yellow pool over the wet pavement.
As Emma stepped out of the car, the front door swung open instantly. Sarah stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her face pale with a mixture of fear and absolute fury.
"What were you thinking?!" Sarah demanded, marching down the steps as Emma walked up the path. "Do you have any idea how terrified I was when I checked your room and found you gone? And then when I saw your car heading toward the industrial impound lot on the tracking app—"
"Sarah, keep your voice down," Emma interrupted, brushing past her sister and stepping into the warm entryway. "We need to wake Luke and pack a bag."
Sarah stopped dead in her tracks, whirling around to face her. "Pack a bag? Are you out of your mind? It’s 3:00 AM! Where on earth are we going?"
Emma turned, her eyes wide and frantic, the adrenaline of her confrontation with Marcus still screaming through her veins. "Away from here, Sarah. Marcus Vance knows we're looking into the crash. He just threatened me with a forged financial indictment. If we stay in this city for another twenty-four hours, he’ll tear our lives apart."
Sarah stared at her sister for a long moment, the anger draining from her face, replaced by a deep, heartbreaking exhaustion. She walked over, grabbed Emma by both shoulders, and forced her to look directly into her eyes.
"Listen to me, El," Sarah said, her voice shaking slightly. "Running doesn't work with men like Marcus Vance. He owns the banks, he owns the municipal records, and he practically owns the state legislature. If you run, he will brand you a fugitive, freeze your bank accounts, and use the courts to take Luke away from you under the guise of 'child endangerment and flight.'"
Emma’s knees buckled slightly. She reached out and braced herself against the hallway console table. "Then what are we supposed to do? Just sit here and wait for him to destroy us?"
"No," a calm, familiar voice echoed from the living room doorway.
Emma and Sarah turned to see Elena stepping out of the shadows, holding a cup of herbal tea. She had apparently stayed over to help watch Luke.
"Elena?" Emma whispered. "How much of that did you hear?"
"Enough to know that Marcus is panicking," Elena said firmly, walking forward with quiet dignity. "He wouldn't have surfaced personally at an impound lot in the middle of the night unless he was terrified of what you might find. He’s bluffing about the federal audit, Emma. Those corporate accounts were frozen by federal regulators months ago during an internal SEC probe. He can't touch them without triggering a grand jury investigation."
Emma stared at her, trying to process the tactical shift in information. "How do you know that?"

"Because my late husband left a digital dead-man’s switch," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a quiet, steely resolve. "Before he died, he uploaded every single piece of forensic evidence regarding David’s crash—and the subsequent embezzlement scheme run by the Vance inner circle—to a secure, encrypted server off-site. A server that unlocks automatically if anything happens to me, or to you."
