Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Wreckage

The digital clock on the dashboard glowed a harsh 2:15 AM as Emma drove her sedan through the empty, winding suburban streets, the rain beginning to mist against the windshield.
Her mind was a chaotic storm of flashing images: David’s smiling face before he drove off to the corporate retreat two years ago, the terrifying phone call telling her about the crash, Luke’s tiny body hooked up to monitors in the intensive care unit, and now Elena’s chilling words echoing in her ears—*It wasn't an accident. It was sabotage.*
She hadn't gone home. She couldn't sleep. Instead, she had dropped Luke off at her sister Sarah’s house under the guise of an "emergency architectural site visit," and driven straight to the municipal impound lot on the industrial outskirts of the city.
The rain picked up, drumming a heavy, rhythmic tattoo against the roof of her car as she pulled up to the rusted chain-link fence of the long-term storage annex.
To her surprise, the heavy rolling gate was unlocked, secured only by a loose iron chain.
Emma killed her headlights, stepped out into the biting chill of the night, and slipped through the gap in the fence. Her boots crunched softly on the wet gravel as she navigated the labyrinth of stacked shipping containers and covered vehicle carcasses.
She was looking for Sector 4-B—the permanent archival grid where twenty-year-old municipal debris and old evidentiary holds were left to rot.
As she rounded a towering stack of rusted scaffolding, she stopped dead in her tracks.
A sleek, black town car was parked illegally between two massive metal containers. The driver's side door was open, and the dome light illuminated a familiar silhouette standing over a metal storage locker.
It was Marcus Vance.
Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs. She ducked behind a stack of industrial crates, holding her breath as she watched the billionaire businessman rifle through a series of yellowed cardboard boxes labeled Vance-19 Transport Incidents.
"I know you're hiding behind the crates, Emma," Marcus’s voice cut cleanly through the sound of the falling rain, smooth and entirely devoid of surprise.
Emma froze. Realizing there was no point in running, she stepped out from the shadows, her chin held high, her eyes blazing with a fierce, protective fury.
"What are you doing here, Marcus?" she demanded, her voice cutting through the damp night air. "Why are you digging through David’s case files?"
Marcus slowly closed the metal box in his hands, turned around, and leaned against the side of the storage locker. He looked calm, almost conversational, which made the underlying menace of his presence ten times more terrifying.
"I could ask you the same question, Emma," Marcus replied evenly. "Though I suppose mothers who write anonymous wishes on party trees are prone to midnight wanderings. You're looking for the truth about the crash, aren't you?"
"Elena told me," Emma said, taking a brave step closer despite the trembling in her hands. "She told me David's brakes didn't fail by coincidence. Your family had him silenced, didn't they? Because he was auditing the medical trust funds."
Marcus let out a slow, heavy sigh, shaking his head as if dealing with a stubborn child. "Elena talks too much. Her late husband was a good investigator, but he suffered from a fatal lack of perspective. David wasn't silenced because he was auditing funds, Emma. He was silenced because he was trying to liquidate the entire corporate asset portfolio to pay off massive private gambling debts—debts he hid behind your architectural firm's name."
Emma staggered backward as if she’d been struck across the face. "That’s a lie. David didn't gamble. He was an honorable man!"
"Honorable men don't keep offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, Emma," Marcus said, stepping forward and holding out a crisp, printed financial ledger under the security light. "Take a look. Your signature is on the corporate authorization line as a secondary guarantor. If those accounts are exposed, your architectural firm goes down, your personal assets are seized, and Luke loses his medical care overnight."

Emma stared at the paper, the world spinning violently around her. Her name. Clear as day. Written in ink she didn't remember laying down.
