Chapter 4 - The Reality Check

"Mom, Courtney, step outside," Brandon said suddenly, his voice dropping into a harsh, commanding tone that surprised even his mother.
Adelaide stared at him in shock. "What did you say?"
"I said, step outside!" Brandon snapped, his patience finally snapping under the crushing weight of public humiliation and financial ruin. "Let me talk to my wife alone."
Fuming, Adelaide grabbed Courtney by the arm and marched out of the room, slamming the heavy wooden door behind them with a force that rattled the metal bedframes.
The room fell dead silent again, save for the soft, steady hum of the hospital monitors.
Brandon walked slowly to the foot of the bed, gripping the metal railing with both hands. His knuckles were white. When he finally looked up at me, his eyes were bloodshot and desperate.
"Elena... please," he whispered, all his corporate bravado completely stripped away. "I was an idiot last night. I was stressed about the upcoming merger, and mom was in my ear, and... I shouldn't have left. I know that now. But freezing my accounts? Towing my car? You’re freezing payroll, Elena. If the board finds out our operational funds are locked, they’ll vote to oust me as CEO by noon."
"Let them," I said quietly.
Brandon flinched as if I had struck him. "What do you mean, let them? That company is my life! It's our future!"
"It's your vanity project, Brandon," I corrected, leaning back against the pillows. "Built with my family’s money, sustained by my administrative oversight, and protected by my silence. For three years, I let you play the brilliant entrepreneur because I loved you. I let your mother insult me because I wanted to preserve your ego. And last night, seven hours after pushing our daughter into the world, you looked me in the eyes, told me to take an Uber, and walked out the door to eat oysters with the woman who has been trying to undermine our marriage for six months."
Brandon’s face paled further. "Victoria? Victoria was just... she was a client, Elena! There's nothing going on between us!"
"Don't insult my intelligence twice in twenty-four hours, Brandon," I said, my voice cutting through the air like a razor. "I read the text messages on your iPad three weeks ago. I saw the dinner reservations in Miami. I know exactly why Victoria was at that restaurant waiting for you last night."
He stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water. Every excuse he had prepared, every manipulative lie he had practiced during his sleepless night in the hotel lobby, evaporated in the face of absolute, unvarnished truth.

"So here are your options," I continued calmly, checking my watch. "At 10:00 AM, a town car provided by my father’s trust is picking me and Maya up to take us to our family estate on the lake. You can either pack your things, sign the CEO resignation papers Mr. Henderson has already emailed to your tablet, and figure out how to explain to your board why you're bankrupt—or you can stay here, keep shouting at the walls, and watch everything you pretended to own disappear completely by sunset."
