Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Two months later, the autumn leaves had turned brilliant shades of amber, gold, and crimson, carpeting the rolling lawns of the Sterling Estate in a blanket of vibrant color.
I stood on the stone veranda overlooking the lake, holding Maya in a soft baby carrier against my chest. She was wide awake now, her bright, curious eyes tracking the flight of a blue jay darting through the golden oak branches.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.
It was a notification from the county family court: Final Decree of Dissolution of Marriage entered and signed. Restoration of maiden/primary surname finalized.
No alimony. No shared assets. No lingering ties to the man who had abandoned me in a hospital room to eat oysters with his mistress. Just a clean, absolute break, leaving me exactly where I belonged—surrounded by family, anchored by my own strength, and holding the future right against my heart.
The front gates down by the drive opened quietly as my father’s car pulled up the winding stone path. He stepped out, smiling as he saw us standing on the veranda in the crisp morning air.

"Your daddy thought he left us stranded," I whispered softly to my daughter, the breeze carrying our voices out across the glittering expanse of the lake. "He had no idea we owned the map."
